Israel’s Information Crisis: Facing the “Eighth Front”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has identified a critical vulnerability in the country’s national security: the “eighth front” of the war. While Israel has long excelled in conventional military defense and traditional diplomacy, it is currently suffering a lopsided defeat in the digital information sphere. Netanyahu recently highlighted the staggering scale of this imbalance, noting that platforms like TikTok are currently saturated with anti-Israel content at a ratio of approximately a thousand to one. This represents a coordinated attempt by state-sponsored actors—including Qatar, China, Russia, and Iran—to isolate Israel internationally and weaken its foundational alliance with the United States.
The current Israeli response is best described as disjointed. While millions of dollars are funneled into physical defenses like the Iron Dome, the battle for the truth is left to a fragmented collection of well-meaning nonprofits, volunteers, and individual influencers. Operating without a central strategy or cohesive narrative, these groups often find their efforts drowned out by sophisticated, state-backed propaganda machines. The result is a failure to match the scale, resources, and tactical integration of adversary nations that treat disinformation as a long-term strategic priority rather than a public relations afterthought.
In seeking a way forward, Israeli leaders have quietly begun studying the model developed by Taiwan. As a small, vibrant democracy existing in the shadow of a much larger, hostile neighbor, Taiwan frequently faces coordinated cognitive warfare, including millions of daily cyberattacks. According to Ambassador Abby Lee, head of the Taiwan Mission to Israel, disinformation functions like a “smokeless bullet.” It leaves no physical forensic evidence, yet it relentlessly erodes a society’s trust in its own institutions, allies, and objective reality until the population itself becomes paralyzed by doubt and confusion.
Taiwan’s success in resisting this onslaught lies in its decision to treat information security as critical national infrastructure. Unlike Israel’s current reliance on decentralized goodwill, Taiwan has established a rigorous state-backed apparatus. This includes real-time sharing of threat indicators among government agencies, the establishment of rapid-response protocols, and a pre-existing “playbook” for combating disinformation. By treating the information space with the same level of seriousness as the electrical grid or water security, Taipei has managed to maintain societal coherence in the face of immense pressure.
To replicate this success, Israel must adopt three fundamental shifts in its approach. First, it must transition from treating advocacy as public relations—a task for diplomats—and instead recognize it as a core component of national defense. This requires government funding for a permanent, rapid-response apparatus. Second, the state must move beyond reactive, fire-fighting tactics by creating established protocols that are refined between, not during, cycles of hostility. The goal is to ensure that institutional knowledge is retained and ready to be deployed the moment a new wave of disinformation begins.
Finally, Israel must formalize efforts to share the burden within a coalition of targeted democracies. Taiwan’s success is partly due to its collaborative intelligence-sharing with other nations facing the same authoritarian, state-run propaganda models. By mirroring this approach and formalizing partnerships with other technologically advanced, small democratic states, Israel can build a collective shield. The existential threats facing Israel and Taiwan serve as a reminder that in the modern era, the physical battlefield cannot be secured if the information landscape is left abandoned. Adopting Taiwan’s strategic, systematic framework is the necessary next step in securing the nation’s eighth front.
