The Role of Disinformation in Catalyzing Anti-Migrant Unrest Following an Attack on a Pensioner in Spain

Torre Pacheco Rocked by Violence Following Pensioner’s Assault, Sparking Anti-Immigrant Unrest and Disinformation

The quiet town of Torre Pacheco in southeastern Spain erupted into chaos this week following the brutal assault of a 68-year-old pensioner named Domingo. The attack, which occurred during Domingo’s routine morning walk, left him with severe injuries to his head, face, and body. While initial reports suggested a possible social media “challenge” targeting vulnerable individuals as the motive, police investigations have yet to confirm this theory. Three individuals of North African descent have been apprehended in connection with the crime, with one suspect, a 19-year-old man believed to be the primary assailant, arrested while attempting to flee to France. The incident ignited simmering tensions within the community, rapidly escalating into two nights of violent protests and unrest.

The assault on Domingo became a lightning rod for existing anti-immigrant sentiments within Torre Pacheco and beyond. Far-right groups, particularly “Deport Them Now,” seized upon the incident to propagate hateful rhetoric and calls for violence against individuals of North African origin. This online mobilization contributed to the escalating unrest, drawing extremists from across Spain to participate in the riots that engulfed the town. Businesses owned by residents of foreign origin were targeted and vandalized, reflecting the growing animosity fueled by the far-right’s inflammatory narrative. The rapid spread of misinformation through social media platforms further exacerbated the situation, creating a climate of fear and distrust.

Amidst the chaos, graphic images of Domingo’s injuries circulated widely online, underscoring the brutality of the attack. However, a video purporting to show the assault itself proved to be unrelated, highlighting the dangerous proliferation of misinformation surrounding the incident. The false video, amplified by prominent political figures, depicted a separate assault in Almería, a town over 200 kilometers away. The victim in that video subsequently came forward to clarify the misunderstanding and provide evidence of his identity. Despite the widespread dissemination of the incorrect footage, no verified video of Domingo’s attack has yet surfaced.

The misinformation campaign extended beyond the initial assault, with various unrelated videos falsely linked to the unrest in Torre Pacheco. One video, purportedly showing young migrants attacking an elderly man in the town, was actually filmed in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2021. Another video, supposedly depicting clashes between protesters and police in Torre Pacheco, actually originated from an earlier incident in the town of Torrevieja. These misleading videos, amplified by social media users and even state-sponsored media outlets, further fueled the flames of unrest and contributed to the escalating tensions within the community.

A fabricated communication, purportedly from the Torre Pacheco town hall, added another layer to the disinformation campaign. This fake document called for a protest against the perceived “insecurity” caused by incidents involving immigrants. The town hall vehemently denied the authenticity of this document, which nonetheless gained traction online, particularly through Telegram channels associated with extremist groups. While the town hall did organize a gathering in response to Domingo’s attack, the official communication made no mention of immigration, focusing instead on condemning the recent criminal acts within the municipality.

Spanish authorities have recognized the significant role of online incitement and disinformation in escalating tensions in Torre Pacheco. Several social media messages calling for violence against immigrants were identified and Telegram groups associated with the extremist group “Deport Them Now” were suspended. Police sources revealed that hundreds of radical extremists, mobilized through online platforms, traveled to Torre Pacheco to participate in the riots. This highlights the potential for online platforms to be exploited for the dissemination of hate speech and the organization of violent activities. The events in Torre Pacheco serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked misinformation and the urgent need for effective strategies to combat its spread.
