Abstract and Research Problem
This study investigates the relationship between college students’ employment-oriented social media use and employment anxiety, framed within China’s highly competitive graduate job market where a record 12.22 million graduates are expected in 2025. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior and cognitive behavioral theory, the research constructs a latent variable structural model featuring dual parallel mediators: social capital and risk perception. The study addresses a critical gap in existing literature, which has predominantly examined single mediating pathways—such as social capital alone or social comparison alone—without integrating both resource-based and cognitive-based mechanisms into a unified framework. By simultaneously examining these parallel mediators, the research aims to determine whether social media alleviates employment anxiety through resource accumulation, cognitive reappraisal, or both operating independently. The study surveyed 2,008 undergraduate students recruited from multiple universities across different regions of China using snowball sampling, with data analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, hierarchical regression, and Bootstrap mediation tests using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 24.0. The sample was diverse, comprising 52.39% female students, 54.98% fresh graduates, and representation from 27 provinces, including students from 985 Project universities, 211 universities, Double First-Class institutions, and non-designated regular universities.
Literature Review and Theoretical Framework
The research synthesizes three distinct strands of literature on employment anxiety, social media use, and their intersection. Employment anxiety, defined as persistent tension and negative emotional experiences triggered by job competition and career uncertainty, has been studied across cultural contexts with consistent findings regarding predictors such as career self-efficacy, psychological resilience, and environmental factors. The literature documents divergent effects of social media on employment anxiety: passive browsing and upward social comparison amplify anxiety, while goal-oriented instrumental use facilitates information access and personal development. Social capital theory, particularly Putnam’s conceptualization, suggests that social media platforms break spatial and temporal limitations of offline networks, facilitating the accumulation of bridging social capital that enriches occupational social resources. Conservation of resources theory further posits that accumulated social capital functions as stable psychological reserves, mitigating stress during job hunting. For risk perception, the study draws on cognitive behavioral theory and protection motivation theory, proposing that instrumental social media use enables students to develop more comprehensive cognition of job-search risks, transforming vague occupational threats into foreseeable and manageable challenges. This cognitive transformation is theorized to reduce diffuse anxiety by enabling proactive planning and strategic preparation. The study proposes seven hypotheses: employment-oriented social media use negatively associates with employment anxiety; it positively associates with social capital; social capital negatively associates with anxiety; social capital mediates the relationship; employment-oriented social media use positively associates with risk perception; risk perception negatively associates with anxiety; and risk perception mediates the relationship.
Methodology and Measurement
The study employed a comprehensive methodological approach with careful attention to measurement validity. Four core constructs were measured using adapted scales: employment-oriented social media use (8 items), social capital (6 items), risk perception (10 items), and employment anxiety (8 items), all using five-point Likert scales. The scales underwent rigorous translation and cultural adaptation procedures, including independent translation, reconciliation, back-translation, expert review, contextual adaptation for Chinese employment contexts, and pilot testing with 50 undergraduates. The Employment Anxiety Scale was already validated in Chinese contexts requiring minimal adjustments. Data collection was conducted through the online platform Wenjuanxing using snowball sampling initiated from diverse seeds across universities, regions, and disciplines to enhance heterogeneity, ultimately retaining 2,008 valid questionnaires (95.62% effective rate). The analytical approach employed a two-stage latent variable SEM paradigm: Stage 1 validated the measurement model through CFA, confirming convergent validity (AVE values ranging from 0.578 to 0.634, CR values from 0.891 to 0.945), discriminant validity (HTMT ratios below 0.85), and model fit (CFI=0.968, TLI=0.964, RMSEA=0.024). Harman’s single-factor test confirmed no substantial common method bias (first factor explained 20.296% of variance). Stage 2 estimated the structural model, and Stage 3 supplemented with hierarchical regression and 5,000-sample Bootstrap mediation tests using factor scores.
Results and Hypothesis Testing
The correlation analysis revealed significant relationships among all variables: employment-oriented social media use showed positive correlations with social capital (r=0.434) and risk perception (r=0.426), but negative correlation with employment anxiety (r=-0.396). The structural regression model with all predictors explained 28.5% of variance in employment anxiety (F=267.505, p<0.001), with no multicollinearity issues (all VIF values below 1.355). All seven hypotheses were supported. The direct effect of employment-oriented social media use on employment anxiety was significant and negative (β=-0.183, p<0.001), confirming H1. Social capital served as a significant mediator: employment-oriented social media use positively predicted social capital (β=0.453), which negatively predicted employment anxiety (β=-0.238), producing an indirect effect of -0.108 accounting for 27.3% of the total effect, with 95% Bootstrap CI excluding zero. Risk perception similarly mediated the relationship: employment-oriented social media use positively predicted risk perception (β=0.427), which negatively predicted employment anxiety (β=-0.245), yielding an indirect effect of -0.105 accounting for 26.4% of the total effect, with 95% Bootstrap CI excluding zero. Subgroup analyses revealed significant differences by university tier and family income. Students from 985 universities showed highest employment-oriented social media use and social capital with lowest anxiety, while ordinary university students showed the reverse pattern. Family income exhibited a curvilinear relationship: the ¥300,000-500,000 bracket showed optimal outcomes, with the lowest income group reporting highest anxiety.
Discussion and Limitations
The findings demonstrate that employment-oriented social media use serves as an anxiety-buffering mechanism rather than merely an amplifier, consistent with uses and gratifications theory. The dual mediation framework reveals two complementary pathways: social capital operates through a resource-provision mechanism, while risk perception functions through cognitive appraisal. The significant direct effect after controlling for mediators suggests additional unexplored mechanisms, potentially including enhanced job-search self-efficacy, vicarious learning, and reduced psychological strain from recruitment information transparency. The study acknowledges several critical limitations. First, the cross-sectional design precludes rigorous causal inference; longitudinal or experimental designs are needed. Second, the employment-oriented social media use scale measured usage as a holistic construct without explicitly differentiating instrumental from passive use, constraining attribution of effects to specific usage patterns. Third, the risk perception scale was originally designed to measure threat-based perceived risk, yet the theoretical interpretation reconceptualizes it as adaptive cognitive appraisal; the scale cannot fully distinguish between threat-based fear and challenge-based cognitive awareness. Fourth, the study did not directly measure intervening behavioral processes such as job-search preparation activities; the proposed mechanism whereby risk cognition translates into proactive preparation remains a theoretical inference requiring empirical verification. Fifth, findings are derived exclusively from Chinese undergraduates, constraining generalizability to other populations given China’s unique higher education system, labor market dynamics, and social media ecosystem. The snowball sampling method may not be fully representative of the national undergraduate population.
Theoretical Contributions and Practical Implications
This study makes three distinct academic contributions. First, it integrates resource-based (social capital) and cognitive appraisal-based (risk perception) theoretical logics into a unified latent structural model, systematically explaining contradictory findings on social media’s dual effects on employment anxiety. Second, it implements a formal two-stage SEM paradigm separating measurement and structural models, eliminating measurement error bias and standardizing analytical workflow. Third, it offers a preliminary theoretical interpretation of risk perception’s role in employment anxiety, proposing that concrete risk awareness may promote proactive coping and reduce uncertainty-driven distress when occurring within instrumental employment-oriented social media use. Practically, the findings suggest that social media’s impact on employment anxiety depends on whether online engagement translates into tangible supportive resources and rational occupational cognition. For students, the recommendation is to establish goal-oriented usage strategies focusing on functional online activities, join professional communities, and transform employment risk cognition into proactive learning motivation. Universities should integrate digital media literacy education with career guidance, build official new media matrices with authentic content, and implement targeted counseling for disadvantaged groups. Social media platforms should improve content governance by restricting anxiety-inducing content, partner with educational institutions for authoritative information zones, and optimize algorithmic recommendations to promote rational career values. Government departments should establish collaborative governance systems, issue guiding documents for employment information governance, support digital employment literacy programs, and strengthen targeted support for students from non-elite universities and low-income families to narrow the employment resource gap among different student groups.
