Georgia’s Central Election Commission Rejects Presidential Allegations of Election Manipulation

TBILISI – Georgia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has vehemently refuted allegations of manipulation in the October 26 general elections, leveled by President Salome Zourabichvili. The CEC dismissed the claims as part of a politically motivated disinformation campaign designed to undermine the integrity of the electoral process. In an official statement, the CEC categorized the President’s accusations, which have been reiterated over several weeks, as "completely unsubstantiated" and driven by political agendas. The Commission underscored the absence of any credible evidence to support claims of significant irregularities that could have swayed the election outcome. The CEC expressed its disappointment with the President’s actions, accusing her of echoing the narrative of specific political factions and thereby exacerbating tensions in an already polarized political climate.

The CEC’s statement strongly defended the integrity of the election process, asserting that the elections were administered with professionalism and in full accordance with established legal frameworks. The Commission cited a recent assessment by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) as validation of its commitment to transparency. While acknowledging some operational challenges and areas for improvement, the CEC maintained that these did not compromise the overall validity of the elections. The Commission emphasized its willingness to address recommendations for enhancing electoral procedures and called for a constructive dialogue among stakeholders to further refine the electoral system.

Addressing concerns of electoral fraud, the CEC highlighted its proactive approach in requesting an independent investigation to objectively assess the allegations. The Commission noted the lack of substantial evidence presented by those making the accusations, despite repeated calls for concrete proof. The CEC urged President Zourabichvili and other individuals making similar claims to either provide verifiable evidence or refrain from disseminating unsubstantiated and misleading statements that erode public confidence in the electoral process.

The CEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, pledging to counter disinformation with factual and comprehensive responses. The Commission stressed its role as a staunch defender of transparent electoral practices, ensuring accurate public information. In its concluding remarks, the CEC appealed to all political actors to act responsibly and collaboratively to strengthen trust in Georgia’s democratic institutions. The Commission urged stakeholders to prioritize constructive engagement and dialogue over actions that could further intensify political divisions.

The CEC’s robust rebuttal of the President’s allegations underscores the importance of preserving public trust in electoral processes. The Commission’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and ongoing improvement of electoral procedures is crucial for fostering a healthy democracy. The CEC’s call for responsible conduct from all stakeholders reflects the need to uphold democratic values and principles.

The accusations of electoral manipulation highlight the challenges faced by democracies worldwide in combating disinformation and maintaining faith in electoral integrity. The CEC’s proactive response serves as an example of how electoral bodies can actively defend democratic processes and promote public confidence in elections. The CEC’s focus on transparency, accountability, and dialogue with stakeholders offers a crucial model for fostering democratic stability and resilience.
