Platform Deals Deliver a Setback to Disinformation

In modern warfare, the speed with which data can be collected, analysed and delivered to a commander has long been recognised as a decisive factor, capable of determining the difference between victory and defeat. From mounted couriers to the telegraph, from radio to encrypted satellite communications, military leaders have always sought faster and more accurate ways to understand the battlefield. Yet the digital age has introduced a profound paradox: while information is more abundant than ever before, the ability to extract meaningful intelligence from that data has become correspondingly more difficult. The sheer volume of digital information generated each day is staggering. Social media platforms produce billions of posts, news outlets operate around the clock, military sensors generate vast streams of operational data, and cyber systems log countless interactions — all of it flowing in real time. For intelligence analysts, this deluge represents a monumental challenge. The critical task is no longer simply gathering information, but filtering it, prioritising it, and ensuring that the right insights reach the right decision-makers at the crucial moment. In the realm of information warfare, this challenge is intensified by adversaries who deliberately flood the information environment with falsehoods, propaganda, and confusion in a bid to undermine trust and create strategic advantage. The Australian Defence Force, like military forces around the world, operates within this contested information landscape, where a commander’s situational awareness can be clouded not only by the traditional fog of war but with an unprecedented fog of data. Identifying what is relevant and timely, and presenting it in a digestible form, is therefore a problem that demands innovative new thinking and advanced technological tools. It is precisely this challenge that researchers at Adelaide University and the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) have sought to overcome through the development of INSIGHT, an on-premises software platform conceived specifically to master the modern information environment and provide military commanders with the clarity they require.

INSIGHT operates as a comprehensive data integration and analysis platform, distinctively hosted on-premises to ensure that sensitive military information never leaves secure defence infrastructure. This architectural choice reflects a fundamental understanding of the security requirements inherent in intelligence work, where the compromise or interception of data could carry catastrophic consequences. The platform’s design enables it to continuously ingest large volumes of information from a diverse ecosystem of sources, including online news outlets, social media feeds, operational reports, and sensor outputs from a wide variety of military and civil systems. Once ingested, the data is processed, classified and weighted according to relevance, reliability and timeliness, allowing the system to perform the kind of triage that would otherwise overwhelm human analysts. Nic Barbotin, INSIGHT’s lead software engineer at Adelaide University, explained that the platform’s core purpose is to cut through the overwhelming noise of the digital environment and surface what truly matters. “This platform finds the most important information from multiple data sources and brings it together into a cohesive view for analysts,” Mr Barbotin said. This marks a fundamental departure from conventional intelligence tools that simply provide access to raw feeds and databases, because INSIGHT actively makes decisions about importance, reducing the cognitive burden on analysts and allowing them to concentrate on interpretation, reasoning, and decision support. The project is the fruit of a close collaboration between Adelaide University’s research community and the Defence Science and Technology Group, bringing together specialised expertise in computer science, data analytics, human-factors engineering, and operational military knowledge. That partnership ensures the tool is built not in an academic vacuum but in direct response to the evolving needs of military commanders, making INSIGHT a genuinely practical instrument in the ongoing effort to transform raw data into actionable intelligence while maintaining the highest possible standards of security and reliability.

The operational value of INSIGHT is perhaps best demonstrated in the context of modern disinformation threats, which have become a pervasive feature of contemporary conflict. Adversaries of the ADF are increasingly skilled in the art of weaponising information, using automated bots, troll networks, compromised media outlets, and orchestrated campaigns to manipulate public opinion, sow discord, and undermine confidence in military institutions. The researchers behind INSIGHT have studied scenarios in which an adversary seizes upon an incident that occurs during a major military exercise or operation. An accident might occur, a provocation might be staged, or a report could be fabricated entirely. Under the old paradigm, such an incident might escape the attention of defence analysts until it has already gained significant traction online, by which time the dominant narrative has been established and the damage done. INSIGHT, however, provides the means to observe the information environment as it evolves, mapping the spread of disinformation across platforms and identifying the networks of accounts and individuals responsible for its propagation. This capability offers the ADF a chance to respond proactively rather than reactively, evaluating whether a response is necessary, what form it should take, and how urgent it must be. Mr Barbotin underscored the importance of this ability in unmistakable terms: “If they’re trying to spread disinformation, the ADF can see the scale and depth and be like, ‘No, we need to correct this’, because it becomes a real problem if people start to believe it.” The capacity to assess a developing information operation in near real-time is absolutely critical, because once falsehoods become entrenched in public consciousness they are extraordinarily difficult to dislodge. INSIGHT offers the Australian Defence Force the opportunity to get ahead of the story, neutralising disinformation before it can achieve lasting impact and preserving the trust on which the military’s credibility ultimately depends.

The speed at which a decision-maker can understand a situation and determine a course of action is, according to those who developed it, the true source of INSIGHT’s power. This principle underpins the platform’s design philosophy and sets it apart from conventional briefing methods. In traditional practice, building a presentation for a senior commander is a laborious process; intelligence analysts gather the necessary data, spend hours preparing slides, and craft a static snapshot of the operational picture at a particular moment in time. The problem is that by the time that presentation is delivered, the situation has almost certainly moved on. Opportunities may have been missed, threats may have evolved, and the briefing, however carefully produced, may no longer reflect reality. In high-tempo operations, the consequences of such delay can be significant, potentially placing forces at risk and conceding the initiative to the adversary. INSIGHT directly addresses this fatal weakness by generating a PowerPoint-style presentation that updates continuously as situations evolve. The live briefing allows presenters to interact with the data during the delivery, drilling down into topics of particular interest, investigating information gaps, and answering questions from commanders as they are posed. In this way, the briefing becomes a dynamic dialogue between analysts and decision-makers rather than a static recitation of yesterday’s news. Mr Barbotin highlighted the shortcomings of the old way of doing things, noting that “previously, you could spend hours putting a presentation together, only to show it to a commander and find it was already out of date or even irrelevant.” This candid observation captures a frustration familiar to military officers and intelligence professionals worldwide. INSIGHT turns the entire process inside out, delivering a continuously refreshed operational picture that is always current, enabling commanders to base decisions on the latest available intelligence, to interrogate the reasoning behind the data, and to explore alternative interpretations without waiting for analysts to return to their desks. In an era where operational tempo continues to accelerate, this compression of the decision cycle is a decisive strategic advantage.

At the heart of INSIGHT lies a simple but powerful concept: the power of visualisation. Human beings are inherently visual creatures, and the capacity to present complex information in visual form is what enables analysts and commanders to discern patterns, relationships, and anomalies quickly and intuitively. Mr Barbotin captured the philosophy succinctly when he stated, “It’s a visualisation program, so as long as there’s data, we can represent it.” The platform uses a variety of graphical formats to achieve this mission, including network diagrams that show connections between people and organisations, geospatial overlays that link activity to specific locations, and temporal displays that reveal how events unfold over minutes, hours and days. For example, an analyst examining a potential threat network might see a complex web of connections spanning international borders, with key nodes representing individuals whose communication patterns suggest a central coordinating role. A commander planning an operation might observe how troop movements in one area correlate with social media chatter in another, providing an early warning of adversary activity. The ability to reveal how people, places, and events all connect represents more than a convenience; it is a genuine cognitive enhancement that allows users to grasp the operational picture at a single glance. In an intelligence context where one critical connection can mean the difference between anticipating an attack and being caught completely by surprise, such capability is invaluable. The visualisation approach also helps to break down disciplinary barriers, enabling specialists from different fields — intelligence, operations, communications, logistics — to develop a truly shared understanding of complex situations. By consolidating this visual power into one platform, INSIGHT allows analysts to spend more of their time engaged in thoughtful interpretation and less in exhaustive searching, while providing commanders with a level of clarity that is exceptionally rare amidst the noise, uncertainty, and confusion of modern conflict.

Information warfare has grown in prominence to rival the traditional physical domains of conflict, and Australia’s adversaries will continue to exploit any vulnerability in the country’s information posture. The capacity to respond rapidly to disinformation, to understand the information environment, and to maintain decision superiority will be tested again in the operations of the future. Platforms such as INSIGHT are therefore not merely technological tools for data processing; they represent a transformation in military culture, an acknowledgment that decision advantage now belongs to those who can best convert raw, messy, and deliberately contested data into clear and actionable understanding. The collaboration that produced INSIGHT, between Adelaide University and the Defence Science and Technology Group, stands as a model for how academic innovation can be directed toward pressing national security challenges, aligning rigorous fundamental research with the urgent requirements of operational users. Looking ahead, the potential of INSIGHT extends well beyond its current applications; the same underlying techniques could be adapted to warn of cyber threats, to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, or to assist civilian agencies in combating organised crime and other transnational threats. But the information environment is changing at an extraordinary pace, and platforms and algorithms will need to evolve continuously as new forms of media emerge and adversaries devise ever-more sophisticated tactics. The ongoing commitment to persistent innovation shown by the system’s developers indicates that they are acutely aware of this reality. As Mr Barbotin and his colleagues continue to refine INSIGHT, the platform’s ability to remain ahead of the information wars of the future will be critical. For now, INSIGHT demonstrates a fundamental truth of twenty-first century military affairs: that data is both the raw material of victory and a potential source of catastrophic defeat, and that tools like this are essential to ensuring the former outweighs the latter.
