Philippine Coast Guard Condemns China’s Recent Disinformation Regarding the West Philippine Sea

PCG Slams China’s Latest WPS Disinformation Campaign

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has vehemently denounced China’s latest attempt to spread disinformation regarding the West Philippine Sea (WPS), labeling it a blatant disregard for international law and a malicious effort to undermine the Philippines’ sovereign rights. The PCG’s strong condemnation comes in response to recent pronouncements by Chinese officials and state-controlled media outlets, which falsely portray the Philippines’ presence and legitimate activities within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as provocative and destabilizing. This disinformation campaign, according to the PCG, represents a clear escalation of China’s ongoing efforts to manipulate the narrative and assert its unfounded claims in the contested waters.

The PCG emphasized that its presence in the WPS is solely to protect Filipino fishermen, uphold maritime law, and defend the Philippines’ sovereign rights within its internationally recognized EEZ. The organization refutes China’s allegations, which depict routine Philippine patrols and resupply missions as aggressive actions. Instead, the PCG highlights China’s continued deployment of its coast guard and maritime militia vessels within the Philippines’ EEZ as the true source of instability and tension in the region. These vessels routinely harass Filipino fishermen, obstruct lawful maritime activities, and engage in dangerous maneuvers, undermining regional peace and security. The PCG reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and called on China to cease its disinformation efforts and respect international maritime norms.

The specific incident that triggered the PCG’s latest response involved China’s misrepresentation of a recent resupply mission to the BRP Sierra Madre, a grounded Philippine naval vessel stationed at Ayungin Shoal (Second Thomas Shoal). China falsely claimed that the Philippines was attempting to permanently occupy the shoal and used this narrative to justify its dangerous actions, which included deploying a water cannon against Philippine vessels engaged in the resupply mission. This aggressive behavior not only endangered the lives of the Filipino crew but also constituted a grave violation of international law, the PCG stated.

The PCG underscored the importance of international cooperation in countering China’s disinformation campaign and maintaining a rules-based order in the South China Sea. The agency highlighted the increasing support from international partners, including the United States, Australia, Japan, and the European Union, who have expressed concern over China’s actions and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding freedom of navigation and overflight in the region. This growing international consensus against China’s assertive behavior, the PCG believes, serves as a crucial deterrent and reinforces the importance of upholding international law. The agency appealed to the international community to continue supporting the Philippines in its pursuit of a peaceful resolution to the maritime disputes and to condemn China’s disinformation tactics, which threaten regional stability.

The implications of China’s disinformation campaign extend beyond the immediate context of the South China Sea dispute. The PCG warned that these tactics represent a broader challenge to the international rules-based order and could embolden other nations to engage in similar behavior. By attempting to rewrite the narrative and undermine the credibility of international institutions, China’s actions pose a significant threat to global peace and security. The PCG emphasized the need for a united and resolute response from the international community to counter such disinformation campaigns and uphold the principles of international law.

Moving forward, the PCG reiterated its commitment to enhancing its maritime capabilities, strengthening international partnerships, and exposing China’s disinformation efforts. The agency believes that by remaining steadfast in its defense of Philippine sovereign rights and upholding international law, it can contribute to creating a more stable and secure maritime environment. The PCG called for continued vigilance and cooperation from all stakeholders to counter China’s destabilizing actions and maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific region. The organization also stressed the need for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the ongoing disputes, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and adherence to international law as the only viable pathways to lasting peace and stability in the region.
