Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delivered a robust defense of India’s economic trajectory during a keynote address at the “Prashiksha Varga” training session for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in Udupi, Karnataka. Dismissing persistent claims from the opposition regarding the fragility of the nation’s financial health, the Minister presented official data to underscore the resilience of the Indian economy. She highlighted that despite a complex global landscape, India achieved a significant overall growth rate of 7.7% for the 2025-26 fiscal year, silencing critics who have long predicted a downward spiral.
A focal point of the Minister’s address was the impressive performance in the final quarter of the 2025-26 fiscal year, which saw a growth rate of 7.8%. Ms. Sitharaman emphasized that this period was particularly challenging due to the escalating West Asia crisis, which severely disrupted global fuel supply chains and threatened to destabilize energy-dependent economies. By maintaining strong growth during this volatility, the government has proven that India’s economic foundations are far more durable than the opposition’s narrative suggests.
Ms. Sitharaman directed sharp criticism toward the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, accusing him and the Indian National Congress of engaging in “fear-mongering.” She argued that since the onset of the conflict in West Asia, opposition leaders have consistently claimed the Indian economy was on the brink of collapse. According to the Minister, such rhetoric is a deliberate attempt to undermine public confidence, and she challenged the opposition’s characterization of the nation’s financial standing by pointing to the stark contrast between their claims and the reality of the official GDP figures.
Providing further evidence of market confidence, the Finance Minister cited a recent report from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), which noted a 60% increase in private sector investment throughout the 2025-26 fiscal year. She challenged the audience to consider the logic of such figures: if there were no genuine prospects for growth or a lack of market demand, corporations would never have committed to such a substantial rise in capital expenditure. The surge in investment acts as a testament to the business sector’s faith in the government’s long-term economic policies.
Addressing the party faithful, Ms. Sitharaman issued a call to action, urging BJP cadres to aggressively counter misinformation spread by political rivals. She stressed that it is the responsibility of the workers to bridge the gap between official data and public perception by propagating facts and figures regarding the government’s developmental achievements and pro-people welfare schemes. She specifically exhorted them to combat the spread of false narratives on social media, insisting that a data-driven approach is the best defense against systemic political propaganda.
Concluding her address, the Minister sought to embolden the Karnataka BJP unit, urging them not to be discouraged by the current political environment in the state. Despite potential efforts by the state government to dampen their morale, she reminded the attendees of the historical resilience of the western coastal region, spanning from northern Kerala to Maharashtra, which has successfully navigated various regional challenges. The meeting, which was attended by Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary and other local leaders, served as a rally for the party’s grassroots organization to remain focused on national progress.
