Access Bank has officially refuted a malicious, viral misinformation campaign currently circulating across social media and WhatsApp platforms, which falsely claims that the financial institution is planning a shutdown. In a strongly worded statement, management denounced the reports as entirely fabricated and misleading, characterizing the maneuver as a deliberate attempt to incite public panic and deliberately disrupt the bank’s day-to-day business operations.

Addressing the unauthorized messages, the bank clarified that these claims are being propagated by bad actors impersonating official communication channels. Access Bank emphasized that there has been no cessation of service, nor is there any pending disruption to its infrastructure. By proactively engaging with the public, the institution aims to dispel the anxieties created by these fraudulent claims, which were designed to appear as legitimate corporate directives.

The bank utilized the opportunity to reassure its diverse base of customers, business partners, and stakeholders that its financial position remains robust and stable. Confirming that all subsidiaries are operating at full capacity, management reiterated its commitment to maintaining high standards of service. They underscored that their core banking operations continue to run seamlessly, despite the external attempt to undermine their professional integrity.

Recognizing the dangers posed by the rapid transmission of false information in the digital age, Access Bank expressed significant concern over the vulnerability of financial institutions to such tactics. The bank highlighted the ease with which rumors can damage public confidence and lead to unnecessary market instability. Consequently, they are working in close collaboration with regulatory and law enforcement authorities to trace the origins of the disinformation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

In its statement, the bank issued a stern warning regarding the legal consequences of such actions. Citing Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024, the institution reminded the public that creating or disseminating false information aimed at causing alarm or damaging institutional reputations is a criminal offense. The bank affirmed its intention to pursue all necessary legal avenues against any individuals identified as participating in the spread of these malicious rumors.

Concluding the announcement, Access Bank urged the public to exercise heightened digital caution and to disregard any unverified information regarding the bank’s operations. Customers were strongly advised not to forward or share the fake notices, as doing so only aids in the success of the perpetrators. Instead, the bank encouraged stakeholders to rely exclusively on verified communications distributed through their official channels to ensure they receive accurate, reliable, and timely updates regarding the bank’s activities.
