Abuja Youth-Led Initiative Spearheads Fight Against Election Misinformation
Abuja, Nigeria, recently became the epicenter of a strategic push to sanitize the digital landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Fundación para la Internacionalización de las Administraciones Públicas (FIAP), in partnership with FactCheckAfrica, successfully concluded a two-day national exhibition titled “#CheckBeforeYouPost: Gen Z Voices Against Disinformation.” Held at the Reiz Continental Hotel from August 6–7, 2026, the event served as the culmination of the EU Support to ECOWAS in Peace, Security and Governance (EPSG) project. The initiative gathered a diverse assembly of young influencers, content creators, and civil society actors to showcase creative, youth-led strategies designed to dismantle the harmful narratives and disinformation campaigns that frequently threaten democratic stability in Nigeria.
The exhibition drew its participants from three rigorous training camps held in Lagos, Enugu, and Kano. During these intensive sessions, Gen Z digital communicators were equipped with specialized skills in fact-checking, ethical content creation, and peace-oriented communication. The first day of the Abuja event focused on synergy, allowing cohort members to synthesize their regional experiences, assess the current state of Nigeria’s civic media ecosystem, and foster cross-regional networks. This collaborative groundwork is intended to form a unified front among young digital creators, ensuring that their individual advocacy efforts evolve into a sustained, collective movement aimed at bolstering the country’s information integrity.
On the second day, the exhibition opened to the public, transforming into a vibrant display of innovative advocacy tools. Attendees were treated to a showcase of short films, spoken word performances, digital graphics, and pilot micro-campaigns specifically engineered to promote responsible information sharing. Beyond the creative displays, the organizers unveiled a suite of practical resources, including the “Responsible Influencer Kit,” a “Safe Journalism Toolkit,” and the “Charter of Ten Principles for Social Media Users.” These tools are designed to serve as a roadmap for digital citizens, providing them with the professional frameworks needed to navigate the complexities of political communication in an increasingly volatile online environment.
The event featured a high-level youth roundtable, where the future of the #CheckBeforeYouPost movement was debated under the watchful eyes of representatives from the European Union, the German Embassy, the Embassy of Denmark, the Spanish Cooperation, and ECOWAS. Abideen Olasupo, Founder of FactCheckAfrica, emphasized that young Nigerians are no longer merely passive consumers of media; they are the primary architects of public discourse. By equipping these creators with the technical tools to distinguish truth from fabrication, the initiative aims to neutralize the influence of bad actors. Olasupo stressed that the exhibition is not a one-off event but a foundational step in a long-term strategy to safeguard the democratic process through the 2027 electoral cycle and beyond.
The broader objective of this intervention is to foster a healthier information ecosystem that can withstand the pressures of electioneering. By bridging the gap between young creators and institutional stakeholders—such as journalists and fact-checkers—the EPSG project seeks to create a culture of verification that counters the viral spread of hate speech and electoral misinformation. The success of the exhibition underscores the necessity of proactive youth engagement in governance. As Nigeria approaches its next major democratic milestone, these young advocates are positioning themselves as the first line of defense against information disorder, ensuring that the digital voices shaping the country’s future are informed, ethical, and committed to peace.
This initiative is a critical component of the wider EPSG project, which is co-financed by the European Union, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. Implemented by FIAP and GIZ, the project focuses on strengthening electoral processes across West Africa by preventing violence and combating disinformation. As the #CheckBeforeYouPost movement continues to gain momentum, it stands as a testament to the power of international collaboration in empowering local youth to protect the sanctity of their democratic processes. Through continued partnership and the application of their newly acquired digital resources, these young Nigerians are setting a new standard for civic responsibility in the digital age.
