The Factitious and FactImage apps operate on a gamified model, challenging users to correctly identify whether specific news articles or photographs are real or fabricated. Participants earn points based on the speed and accuracy of their responses, with higher scores unlocking a larger library of content, which currently includes over 400 images and 500 news stories. By transforming the arduous task of fact-checking into an interactive experience, Grace provides an accessible way for individuals to sharpen their critical thinking skills. The apps are available on both iOS and Android platforms and have been localized into multiple languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, and Chinese to reach a global audience.
In FactImage, players navigate timed 30-second rounds where they must inspect images for telltale signs of AI manipulation. The app teaches users to look for common “hallucinations” or errors often present in synthetic imagery, such as distorted hands, incongruent lighting, or physically impossible backgrounds. Even as AI developers work to correct these flaws, Grace emphasizes that the process of looking for these clues trains the brain to remain vigilant and skeptical. By offering detailed reveals after each round, the game educates players on the provenance-checking techniques used by professional fact-checkers, effectively lowering the barrier to entry for media literacy.
Complementing the image-based game, Factitious focuses on the nuances of written language. Grace notes that identifying AI-generated text requires readers to look “between the lines,” searching for subtle errors like unaccredited sources, misused punctuation, and awkwardly structured sentences. With a current player accuracy rate of 45 percent, the data collected from the game highlights just how easily the public can be misled by convincing, yet artificial, narratives. By mixing articles from reputable organizations like the BBC with fabricated AI content, Factitious forces users to confront the reality of the “post-truth” landscape in a low-stakes environment.
Beyond the apps, Grace has furthered his advocacy for digital intelligence through his book, The Literate Citizen: A Guide to Communication Literacy in a Networked World. In this work, he argues that traditional media literacy—such as simply deconstructing a single ad—is no longer sufficient to navigate our modern, algorithmic, and fragmented information ecosystem. Grace asserts that we are no longer passive media consumers; we are active participants in a global exchange of messages. He believes that to preserve social trust and mitigate the dangers of misinformation, individuals must develop a more sophisticated, holistic understanding of how information is generated and spread.
