According to the China Martyrs Network, the two individuals lost their lives during a “rights defense operation” on August 11, 2025. While Beijing has provided no specific details regarding the circumstances of their deaths, official records from that date indicate a chaotic confrontation near Bajo de Masinloc. During this event, the China Coast Guard (CCG) cutter 3104, while aggressively pursuing the Philippine Coast Guard’s BRP Suluan, collided with a Chinese warship, the Guilin, resulting in significant damage to the CCG vessel.
The incident highlights the volatile environment created by China’s persistent blockades around Bajo de Masinloc, a traditional fishing ground where Beijing continues to assert unlawful control. At the time of the collision, the BRP Suluan was engaged in a humanitarian mission to provide fuel and provisions to Filipino fishermen. Chinese vessels, employing standard harassment tactics, attempted to hem in the Philippine patrol boat.
