The spread of false narratives intensified with the involvement of more prominent social media users. Real News Éire, a well-known anti-immigration account, shared a video purportedly depicting the attack, again falsely identifying the assailant as a “foreigner.” This post garnered significant attention, accumulating hundreds of thousands of views and further solidifying the inaccurate narrative in the minds of many. Former mixed martial artist Conor McGregor also weighed in, using inflammatory language to connect the incident to the government’s immigration policies, significantly broadening the misinformation’s reach with his large follower base.
Gardaí responded to the escalating misinformation by releasing an official statement at 8:32 pm, confirming the attack and the arrest of the assailant. Notably, the statement refrained from disclosing the attacker’s nationality or ethnicity, a departure from earlier incidents where such details were released promptly to preempt the spread of misinformation.
