Minnesota Republicans Denounce Misinformation Propagated by Far-Right Influencer Regarding Representative Hortman

Minnesota Republicans Condemn Social Media Influencer’s Misinformation Regarding Rep. Hortman’s Death

The tragic deaths of Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, along with the injuries sustained by Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in a June 2025 shooting spree, have become the subject of a contentious misinformation campaign. Far-right social media influencer Melissa Tate has sparked outrage among Minnesota Republicans for propagating false claims about the motive behind the horrific attack. Tate’s assertions connect Rep. Hortman’s vote alongside Republicans on a bill concerning MinnesotaCare access for undocumented immigrants to the tragedy, suggesting a politically motivated assassination by a Democratic appointee of Governor Tim Walz.

Republicans swiftly denounced Tate’s narrative, labeling it as “nonsense” and “completely fabricated.” Representative Nolan West emphasized that the suspect was not a Democrat and that the board appointment held by the individual was non-partisan. He stressed that Hortman’s murder was not linked to her bipartisan vote. Similarly, Representative Mary Franson dismissed Tate’s claims, stating that Rep. Hortman was not targeted for siding with Republicans, but rather fell victim to a “crazy person” operating under a delusional belief of acting on Governor Walz’s orders. The suspect, originally appointed to the workforce development council by Governor Mark Dayton in 2016 and subsequently reappointed by Governor Walz in 2019, served on an unpaid, external board with numerous members from various political affiliations. This detail further discredits Tate’s portrayal of the suspect as a politically motivated Democratic assassin.

The timing of Tate’s posts coincided with the revelation of a motive behind the shooting of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. The FBI and Kirk’s family indicated a shift in his political leanings towards the left, prompting Tate to exploit this information to bolster her narrative, alleging that violence exists “on both sides.” This attempt to equate the two incidents, however, is misleading and ignores the distinct circumstances surrounding each event. The suspect in the Hortman and Hoffman shootings operated under a delusional premise, while Kirk’s shooter’s motive remains unclear, but does not appear to be connected to his political views.

The misinformation spread by Tate has not only added to the grief and trauma experienced by the victims’ families and the community but has also fueled partisan divisions. By falsely attributing a political motive to a senseless act of violence, Tate has sought to sow discord and further polarize the political landscape. Minnesota Republicans have taken a firm stance against this dangerous rhetoric, emphasizing the need for factual accuracy and responsible discussion in the aftermath of this tragedy.

The Hortman and Hoffman shootings serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and the importance of accurate reporting. Exploiting such tragedies for political gain not only disrespects the victims and their families but also undermines the public’s trust in information sources. The responsible dissemination of information is crucial, particularly in the aftermath of traumatic events.

The Minnesota Republicans’ swift condemnation of Tate’s misinformation campaign demonstrates their commitment to upholding the truth and preserving the memory of their late colleague. Their actions send a message that political opportunism has no place in the face of tragedy and that factual accuracy must always prevail over misleading narratives. The continued pursuit of accurate information and the condemnation of those who spread misinformation remain essential to ensuring that justice is served and that the memory of the victims is honored with respect and dignity.
