Government Denies Social Media Censorship During Protests, Emphasizes Combating Disinformation

Jakarta – The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has categorically denied allegations of government-directed censorship or restriction of social media content during the recent protests on August 28th. These demonstrations, primarily targeting the House of Representatives, sparked widespread online discussion and debate. Director General of Digital Space Monitoring, Alexander Sabar, unequivocally stated that no directive was issued by the Ministry or any governmental body to remove or restrict access to social media platforms during the protests. He emphasized the government’s commitment to freedom of expression while simultaneously stressing the importance of maintaining order and responsible online behavior. This clarification comes amidst concerns about potential restrictions on online discourse and the spread of misinformation surrounding the protests.

Sabar urged the public to refrain from disseminating disinformation and hoaxes, highlighting the detrimental impact of false narratives on public discourse and the potential to incite unrest. He underscored the importance of peaceful expression and emphasized the government’s ongoing dialogue with social media platforms regarding the handling of provocative and misleading content. The Ministry has adopted a proactive approach, engaging with these platforms to establish collaborative mechanisms for addressing disinformation and ensuring the responsible use of online spaces. While respecting the principles of free speech, the government remains committed to maintaining online order and preventing the spread of harmful content that could jeopardize public safety or democratic processes.

Deputy Minister Angga Raka Prabowo echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the crucial role of social media platforms in safeguarding the public from the dangers of disinformation, hoaxes, and hate speech. He warned that the proliferation of false narratives could discourage legitimate expressions of opinion and undermine the foundations of democratic discourse. Prabowo highlighted the importance of creating an online environment where individuals feel empowered to express their views without fear of manipulation or intimidation by misleading information. He stressed the shared responsibility of all stakeholders, including social media platforms, to ensure the integrity of online information and protect the public from the corrosive effects of disinformation campaigns.

Prabowo called for a collaborative approach involving all stakeholders, including social media platforms, civil society organizations, and the public, to combat the spread of disinformation. He emphasized the need for robust verification mechanisms to ensure the accuracy of information circulating online. He advocated for proactive measures by social media platforms to identify and remove disinformation, hoaxes, and hate speech, highlighting the potential of automated systems to play a crucial role in this process. He emphasized the importance of national regulations and urged all platform operators in Indonesia to comply fully with these legal frameworks.

The Ministry’s assertion of non-interference underlines the government’s commitment to upholding freedom of speech while simultaneously tackling the growing challenge of online disinformation. The government acknowledges the delicate balance between protecting free expression and maintaining online order, particularly in the context of public protests and politically charged events. This statement reinforces the government’s commitment to fostering an online environment where individuals can freely express their views while remaining protected from the harmful effects of disinformation.

The Ministry’s emphasis on dialogue and collaboration with social media platforms signifies a proactive approach to address the challenges posed by online disinformation. The government recognizes the crucial role of these platforms in shaping public discourse and acknowledges the shared responsibility in combating the spread of false narratives. By engaging in constructive dialogue and establishing clear guidelines for content moderation, the government aims to create a more responsible and trustworthy online environment. This collaborative approach reflects a broader commitment to safeguarding democratic values and ensuring the integrity of information circulating in the digital sphere.
