The integration of social media into the daily lives of athletes has created a complex psychological environment that blurs the lines between professional branding and personal health. While these platforms offer unprecedented opportunities for connection and self-expression, they also introduce unique pressures related to performance scrutiny, public perception, and constant social comparison. A recent systematic review conducted by Siaj et al. (2026), published in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, synthesized empirical data to map how these digital interactions influence the mental health of athletes across various competitive levels, from collegiate hopefuls to elite professionals.
The research, which utilized a rigorous PRISMA-compliant methodology to analyze eleven key studies, reveals that the impact of social media is far from uniform. The findings challenge the notion that “screen time” is the primary culprit for psychological distress. Instead, the review highlights that how an athlete engages with these platforms—whether through active, intentional communication or passive, comparative scrolling—is the decisive factor in determining mental outcomes. While problematic usage patterns are consistently linked to anxiety, burnout, and body image dissatisfaction, intentional engagement can, in specific contexts, serve as a tool for community building and identity formation.
A significant portion of the evidence points to “passive browsing” as a major risk factor for psychological ill-being. When athletes use platforms like Instagram to engage in appearance-based or performance-based social comparison, the results are often detrimental. The data suggests that such behaviors are closely tied to increased risks of eating disorders, particularly among female athletes and those in high-pressure competitive environments. Furthermore, sleep disruption emerged as a critical mediator; social media addiction was frequently found to erode sleep quality, which in turn amplified negative emotional states and symptoms of athlete burnout.
Conversely, the review identifies an “adaptive” side to digital life. Qualitative insights from the study show that many athletes engage in “digital pruning”—a deliberate strategy where they curate their feeds, unfollow triggering accounts, and prioritize spaces that foster authentic connection. Other studies noted that during periods of extreme social isolation, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, social media served as a vital lifeline that reduced feelings of loneliness and stress. This suggests that when athletes exercise agency and intentionality, social media can shift from a source of anxiety to a source of social and psychological support.
The review also highlights a critical gap in our current understanding: the “elite” perspective remains under-researched. While much of the existing data focuses on student-athletes, the unique pressures faced by professional athletes—who must navigate intense public branding, sponsorship demands, and persistent online criticism—are not yet fully understood.
