The digital landscape continues to be a hotbed for misinformation, as evidenced by a series of viral claims debunked by Newschecker over the past week. From manipulated visuals to audio deepfakes, bad actors are increasingly utilizing sophisticated technology and out-of-context older footage to fuel communal tensions and political discord. As social media platforms become the primary source of news for millions, the proliferation of these deceptive narratives underscores the urgent need for critical media literacy and rigorous verification processes before users hit the “share” button.

One of the most prominent pieces of misinformation circulating recently involved a video clip falsely claiming to show BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut being assaulted. The video, which gained traction following the politician’s polarizing remarks regarding “Gen Z” and her stance on the CJP protests, was framed by users as a direct physical retaliation to her comments. However, investigations confirmed that the footage was entirely unrelated to the MP. By repurposing an old video from West Bengal, malicious actors attempted to manipulate public sentiment and capitalize on the heated political discourse surrounding Ranaut’s recent public appearances.

In the realm of international communal tensions, another piece of viral content attempted to exacerbate conflict between religious groups. A video depicting the vandalism of a mosque was shared extensively on social media, with posters alleging that the incident occurred in Nepal amid ongoing communal unrest between Hindu and Muslim communities. Newschecker debunked this claim, identifying the video as an old, unrelated clip from Delhi. The spreading of such footage serves a dangerous purpose: it acts as an accelerant for real-world instability by providing fabricated visual “evidence” to stir emotions and incite communal hatred in regions already struggling with social friction.

The academic and political scene in Jharkhand also became a focal point for misinformation when a video circulated claiming to show CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke arriving in Ranchi. The footage suggested he had traveled to the state to show solidarity with students protesting against alleged irregularities in the JPSC examinations, showing him being honored with a ceremonial scarf. Upon verification, this claim was found to be entirely baseless. The video was proven to be disconnected from the students’ protests in Jharkhand, illustrating how influencers and activists often use misidentified footage to build false narratives of external support or political alignment.

Technological deception took center stage in two other viral instances involving both static imagery and audio deepfakes. In one case, a viral image purportedly showed an official from the Indian High Commission participating in a Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) rally in London. Investigative efforts revealed that the image was a product of artificial intelligence, intentionally crafted to implicate diplomatic officials in foreign political movements. Similarly, a separate incident involved an AI-generated audio clip that allegedly featured former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina calling for the “unification of East and West Bengal.”

These instances of AI-driven misinformation represent an evolving threat to democratic discourse, where the line between reality and fabrication is increasingly blurred. By generating realistic audio and visual content that plays into existing regional prejudices and geopolitical anxieties, these campaigns aim to destabilize public opinion on a grand scale. As we navigate this complex information ecosystem, the findings from this week serve as a stark reminder that digital content—whether it appears to be a raw video from a riot or a recorded statement from a world leader—must be met with extreme skepticism to prevent the further spread of damaging falsehoods.
