YouTube has taken decisive action in the ongoing information war by removing or blocking 25 channels directly linked to Russian propaganda and entities involved in the aggressive campaign against Ukraine. The platform’s decision, which involved both total account removals and geo-blocking for Ukrainian users, targets a wide network of Kremlin-affiliated media, sanctioned political figures, and extremist “volunteer” groups. This initiative is part of a broader, sustained effort to curb the reach of content that justifies the invasion and promotes hostilities against the Ukrainian state.
The Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) confirmed that the crackdown includes high-profile propaganda projects such as “Ukraine.ru” and “RIA Novosti.” These outlets have long been identified as primary engines for state-sponsored narratives designed to destabilize the region and influence public perception. By removing these large-scale digital assets, YouTube is effectively dismantling significant hubs of disinformation that have operated under the guise of news media to fuel support for the Russian occupation.
The blacklist also extends to specific individuals who have played prominent roles in the geopolitical information struggle. Sanctioned politician Yevgeny Murayev, along with propagandists Tatyana Montyan and Alexander Sladkov, saw their channels scrubbed from the platform. Additionally, access to pages belonging to other figures under the sanctions of the National Security and Defense Council—including Vsevolod Filimonenko and Yuriy Kot—has been severely restricted, specifically targeting users within Ukraine to limit the domestic impact of their rhetoric.
The scope of the operation reflects the complexity of the “information ecosystem” Russia has used to support its military objectives. Beyond individual influencers, the restrictions targeted institutional entities such as the “All-Russian Cossack Society” and the “Union of Journalists of Russia,” as well as the television news channel ZvezdaNEWS. These organizations have been accused of acting as conduits for Kremlin talking points, providing a veneer of legitimacy to military actions and recruitment drives for the occupying forces.
According to the CCD, these resources were not merely journalistic platforms but active participants in the war effort, disseminating falsehoods aimed at normalizing violence and undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty. The agency emphasized that these channels functioned as support structures for Russian military aggression, providing a digital front for the ideological conditioning of audiences. The CCD further noted that this action is not an isolated event but a continuation of a systematic campaign to cleanse online spaces of hostile propaganda.
As the conflict persists across both physical and digital battlefronts, the identification and neutralization of these platforms remain a top priority for security forces. YouTube’s latest intervention is part of a larger trend involving both domestic and international platforms working to restrict Russian state media’s ability to incite discord.
