A recent scoping review published in BDJ Open has shed light on the pervasive nature of dental and oral health misinformation online, from myths regarding fluoride to the emergence of risky “DIY dentistry” trends. Researchers analyzed 61 studies to map how false or misleading health information is defined, measured, and disseminated across digital platforms. While the findings confirm that unreliable content is widespread on sites like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, the study highlights a critical gap in our current understanding: despite the abundance of misleading claims, there is surprisingly little direct evidence demonstrating that this content significantly alters patient behavior or leads to tangible, negative clinical outcomes.
The rise of online misinformation presents a unique challenge for the dental profession, particularly due to the intersection of aesthetic trends and loosely regulated home-treatment products. Unlike traditional pharmaceuticals, many oral health items are marketed as cosmetics, allowing companies to bypass stringent regulatory oversight. This enables viral, algorithm-driven content to reach massive audiences on platforms like Instagram, often promoting procedures or products that are unsupported by scientific consensus. Such content not only risks professional credibility but may also foster patient anxiety and a growing distrust in evidence-based clinical care, yet the healthcare community has long lacked a systematic synthesis of how this digital ecosystem functions.
In their methodology, the researchers examined a broad spectrum of digital output, identifying that while misinformation (false information) and poor-quality information (unverified or incomplete information) are distinct, both categories frequently go viral. The study reveals a significant “quality-engagement paradox”: content with high engagement metrics—such as likes, shares, and views—rarely correlates with high quality scores. While professionally curated content often ranks well for accuracy, it frequently fails to gain the same algorithmic traction as visually optimized or exaggerated promotional material. This trend is particularly evident in topics ranging from dental implants and aligners to the more controversial narratives surrounding water fluoridation.
Platform-specific trends emerged from the analysis, with YouTube serving as the most studied medium, followed closely by Instagram. While YouTube often housed longer-form, academic-based information, Instagram was identified as a primary hub for aesthetic marketing. Emerging platforms like TikTok have become hotspots for DIY remedies, which present immediate safety concerns for users attempting procedures at home. Despite these observations, the review emphasizes that the current academic literature is heavily focused on the existence of this content rather than its impact. Most studies stop at auditing the quality of the information, typically failing to track whether these posts actually lead to delays in professional treatment or specific health harms.
The scarcity of data regarding patient-level outcomes remains the most significant hurdle for public health officials. Out of the 61 studies reviewed, only 29 mentioned patient behaviors, and an even smaller number linked content to actual physical harm or delayed care. Instead, healthcare researchers are currently relying on plausible hypotheses—such as the theory that misinformation increases dental anxiety—rather than established, causal evidence. This lack of rigorous, longitudinal research makes it difficult for policymakers and dental associations to develop targeted interventions, as they currently lack the evidence base to prove that digital consumption translates directly into broader public health crises.
Looking ahead, the authors propose a multi-faceted approach to curbing the influence of digital misinformation. The review concludes that the dental community must pivot from simply identifying myths to actively flooding digital spaces with accessible, evidence-based content tailored to the specific algorithms of diverse platforms. Furthermore, the researchers call for strengthened regulatory oversight of cosmetic dental marketing, better collaboration between tech platforms and health agencies, and more robust empirical studies that track patient outcomes. By bridging the gap between professional expertise and social media accessibility, the dental field may better protect patients from the growing influence of digital deception.
