The Maharashtra Cyber Cell has uncovered a sophisticated digital disinformation campaign aimed at inciting unrest in Mumbai and across the state, specifically surrounding the recent Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest march. According to official reports, investigators identified and purged 429 individual social media handles and posts that were actively disseminating inflammatory, derogatory, and completely fabricated content. This operation highlights the growing challenge law enforcement faces in monitoring the rapid spread of misinformation, particularly when malicious actors leverage emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence to compromise social stability.

The breadth of this digital operation spanned multiple major platforms, revealing a calculated approach to narrative manipulation. Instagram emerged as the most exploited vector, accounting for 312 of the flagged posts, followed by 55 posts on X (formerly Twitter), 40 on Facebook, and 22 on YouTube. The Maharashtra Cyber Cell acted decisively to delete these URLs and accounts, noting that the content was explicitly designed to stoke regional and national tensions by spreading false narratives regarding the CJP protest.

A breakdown of the data provided by Additional Director General of Police (State-Cyber) Yashasvi Yadav reveals the globalized nature of this threat. While a significant majority of the malicious accounts—approximately 76.7% or 329 posts—were traced to handles based within India, the remaining 23.3% (100 posts) were identified as originating from outside the country. This mix of domestic and international influence suggests that the digital campaign was a coordinated effort involving both local actors and external entities aiming to destabilize the socio-political climate in Mumbai.

Perhaps most concerning to authorities is the substantial integration of AI-assisted tools in the fabrication process. Findings indicate that 32.6% of the identified posts utilized artificial intelligence to either generate or manipulate content, marking an alarming trend in how disinformation is weaponized. These AI-generated elements make it increasingly difficult for the average social media user to distinguish between authentic footage and synthetic falsehoods, thereby amplifying the potential for civil disorder and public panic.

The technical investigation into these accounts has already yielded evidence of transnational interference. Specifically, the Cyber Cell analyzed a Pakistan-based X account that had been created back in April 2026 using a Pakistan-specific Android application. This account was found to be a primary node for spreading AI-manipulated content meant to cause maximum societal disruption. By tracing the digital footprint of these accounts, investigators have been able to map how foreign-origin tools are being repurposed to target specific political moments within India.

One prominent example of this deception occurred on July 23, when a malicious post went viral claiming that a student had passed away during an ongoing protest in Jantar Mantar and that authorities had refused to file an FIR for the grieving mother. The Cyber Cell successfully debunked this narrative, confirming that the student had been stabilized following CPR and that the video of the mother had been surgically manipulated through AI to sound more distraught and accusatory than in the original footage. As these technologies evolve, the Maharashtra Cyber Cell remains on high alert, emphasizing the necessity of digital literacy and rapid response protocols to combat the next generation of social media disinformation.
