Jammu, July 3: In a sharp political critique delivered at the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) provincial office, Provincial President Ratan Lal Gupta launched a blistering attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the saffron party of orchestrating a systematic smear campaign against the Omar Abdullah-led administration. According to Gupta, these diversionary tactics are a calculated attempt by the BJP to mask its own governance failures and an extensive list of broken promises during its tenure. Addressing a gathering organized by former MLA Bimla Luthra for newly nominated women office bearers, Gupta argued that the BJP’s focus has shifted from constructive policy to negative rhetoric as a way to avoid accountability for the current state of affairs in the region.
Gupta asserted that the BJP has fundamentally squandered the trust of the Jammu electorate, failing to deliver on the core platform that secured their mandate. He highlighted that while the party had campaigned on ambitious slogans of sweeping development, massive job creation, and region-wide prosperity, the reality on the ground has been marked by stagnation and disillusionment. The Provincial President emphasized that the region is currently grappling with a severe deficit in progress, which he characterized as a direct result of the BJP’s administrative neglect and the failure to address the genuine grievances of the citizenry.
The senior NC leader characterized the BJP’s transition from a governing party to an opposition force as a “betrayal of trust,” claiming that the populace has been left in a state of uncertainty. He pointedly remarked that the era of “progress” promised by the BJP was replaced by a widening chasm between the administration and the public. By prioritizing political maneuvering over substantive governance, Gupta argued, the BJP has effectively alienated the very people who once placed their faith in the party, leaving behind a legacy characterized by unfulfilled commitments and developmental decline.
A major focal point of Gupta’s address was the lingering issue of statehood, a topic he identified as the primary source of public anxiety across Jammu and Kashmir. He challenged the BJP to pivot away from baseless criticism of the current elected government and instead address the delay in the restoration of statehood, which remains a cornerstone of the region’s democratic aspirations. Gupta argued that the ongoing uncertainty surrounding this status is not merely a political grievance but a factor that undermines the democratic fabric of the region, deepening the trust deficit that continues to plague the state’s political landscape.
Reaffirming the stance of the National Conference, the Provincial President pledged that the current administration remains steadfast in its objective to restore institutional integrity and ensure equitable development for all regions. He dismissed the politics of misinformation and confrontation prevalent in the current discourse, advocating instead for a governance model rooted in accountability and the transparent fulfillment of public promises. Gupta warned that such divisive tactics would not serve the interests of the people for long, as there is an increasing demand for stability and verifiable progress over political theatrics.
Concluding the meeting, Gupta issued a call to action for the party’s newly appointed women office bearers, urging them to reinvigorate the National Conference at the grassroots level. He stressed the importance of maintaining an active connection with the, urging them to serve as a voice for the marginalized and to pursue public issues with unwavering dedication. The event also marked the formal appointment of new leadership within the District Jammu Urban Women Wing, including Prabha Slathia as Senior Vice President, Kailash Jamwal and Baljeet Kour as District Joint Secretaries, and Sunita Jamwal as Cashier, all of whom are tasked with organizing and strengthening the party’s outreach in the region.
