Combating Misinformation: Industry Leaders Unite to Promote Electric Vehicle Adoption

A coalition of prominent automotive organizations, including the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), Cox Automotive Europe, and EVA England, has joined forces with Auto Trader, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Zapmap, and the National Franchise Dealer Association (NFDA) to address the growing wave of misinformation surrounding electric vehicles (EVs). This collaborative effort aims to provide consumers with accessible, data-driven information that clarifies the realities of EV ownership and operation, ultimately fostering confidence in the transition to electric mobility. The campaign builds upon an initiative launched in November 2024 and seeks to empower individuals to make informed decisions based on factual evidence rather than misleading narratives.

The misinformation campaign, as reported by the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP), has created significant hurdles for fleet managers who increasingly find themselves countering unfounded claims about EVs. Negative narratives surrounding EV safety, range limitations, and environmental impact have sown seeds of doubt among potential buyers. The collaborative “EV Facts” initiative seeks to dispel these misconceptions by presenting verifiable data and debunking prevalent myths. This collaborative approach underscores the industry’s recognition that widespread EV adoption requires a united front against misinformation and a concerted effort to educate the public.

The “EV Facts” initiative centers around a collection of user-friendly facts presented in a clear and concise manner, enabling easy comprehension for a broad audience. These facts address key concerns about electric cars, demonstrating their environmental benefits, comparable safety records to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, and the continually improving range and charging infrastructure. The campaign emphasizes the significant cost savings associated with EV ownership, now estimated at £1,500 annually, encompassing maintenance, insurance, and fuel expenses. Moreover, the initiative highlights the shrinking price gap between new electric and petrol cars, which has decreased from 33% in 2024 to 22% in May 2025, further enhancing the appeal of EVs.

Toby Poston, BVRLA chief executive, emphasizes the critical role of leasing and fleet sectors in driving the EV transition, aided by government support. The success of this transition hinges on enabling all drivers, regardless of whether they seek new or used vehicles, to make the switch. While government incentives remain crucial for boosting demand for used EVs, the "EV Facts" initiative complements these efforts by addressing the informational barriers that hinder consumer adoption. By providing clear and accurate information, the campaign empowers consumers to make informed choices about transitioning to zero-emission motoring.

Karoline Baumann, strategy and growth director at Cox Automotive Europe, underscores the importance of consumer confidence in achieving a fully electric future. Recognizing the detrimental impact of recent negative media coverage on consumer perceptions, Baumann emphasizes the critical role of campaigns like “EV Facts” in countering misinformation and providing clarity on this complex topic. Cox Automotive Europe’s support for the campaign reflects its commitment to fostering a positive narrative around EVs and facilitating the transition to sustainable transportation.

The "EV Facts" data points undergo regular review and updates to ensure accuracy and relevance. The information is endorsed by the Department for Transport (DfT), adding further credibility and ensuring alignment with government policy. Future of roads minister Lilian Greenwood welcomes the industry’s proactive approach in showcasing the benefits of EV adoption. Greenwood highlights the decreasing costs, improved range, and rapidly expanding charging network as compelling reasons to embrace electric vehicles. The partnership between industry stakeholders and the government underscores the shared commitment to accelerating the transition to a sustainable transportation future. With the cost of EV ownership decreasing, range anxiety becoming less of a concern due to technological advancements, and the UK’s charging infrastructure rapidly expanding, the case for switching to electric vehicles grows stronger every day.
