Cameroon Bishop Condemns Rising Tide of Hate Speech and Tribalism Ahead of Presidential Election

BAFOUSSAM, Cameroon – Bishop Paul Lontsié-Keuné of the Catholic Diocese of Bafoussam has issued a stark warning against the escalating spread of hate speech, tribalism, misinformation, and outright lies in Cameroon as the nation gears up for its presidential election in October. In a powerful message addressed to the faithful, the Bishop expressed deep concern that these divisive forces pose a grave threat to peace and national unity, jeopardizing the prospects of a peaceful and credible election.

Bishop Lontsié-Keuné’s message, shared with ACI Africa, underscores the urgency of addressing this alarming trend. He unequivocally condemned the toxic climate of misinformation and manipulation, emphasizing that true and lasting peace cannot be built upon such foundations. He pointed to the instrumentalization of law and the flexible interpretation of legal principles for political gain as further obstacles to achieving a just and peaceful society. He warned that these tactics erode public trust and undermine the integrity of the electoral process.

The Bishop’s condemnation extends to the increasing prevalence of tribalism and hate speech, particularly in televised debates and on social media platforms. He highlighted the dangers of these divisive narratives, which exploit existing societal fault lines and fuel animosity among different groups. He cautioned that these trends, if left unchecked, could lead to further polarization and violence, undermining the country’s fragile social fabric.

The Bishop’s message serves as a timely reminder of the crucial role of ethical leadership and responsible communication in fostering a peaceful and democratic environment. He called upon all stakeholders, including political leaders, media outlets, and citizens, to reject divisive rhetoric and promote tolerance, respect, and understanding. He urged Cameroonians to prioritize the common good and work together towards building a more inclusive and harmonious society.

The upcoming presidential election presents a critical juncture for Cameroon. The choices made by the electorate will have a profound impact on the nation’s future trajectory. Bishop Lontsié-Keuné’s message serves as a powerful call for unity and a reminder of the shared responsibility to safeguard the principles of peace, justice, and democracy. He urged citizens to exercise their right to vote wisely and to choose leaders who uphold these values.

As Cameroon stands at this crossroads, the international community also has a role to play in supporting the country’s democratic processes and promoting peace and stability in the region. By working together, Cameroonians and their international partners can help ensure a peaceful and credible election that paves the way for a more just and prosperous future. The Bishop’s message serves as a rallying cry for all who believe in the power of unity and the importance of upholding democratic values.
