WASHINGTON – The US Department of Justice announced on Tuesday the disruption of a sophisticated Russian propaganda operation leveraging artificial intelligence to spread disinformation online, particularly targeting the American public. This operation, orchestrated by the Kremlin, involved a network of fictitious social media profiles masquerading as authentic Americans, designed to sow discord within the US and promote pro-Russian narratives, particularly concerning the war in Ukraine. Officials highlighted the campaign’s connection to a senior editor at RT, a Russian state-funded media outlet registered as a foreign agent with the Justice Department, who allegedly helped develop the technology for a social media bot farm used in the operation.
