Nobel Laureate Yunus Urges Meta to Combat Disinformation in Bangladesh
DHAKA, BANGLADESH – Nobel Peace Prize laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus has called upon Meta Platforms, Inc., the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, to take decisive action against the proliferation of disinformation on its platforms, particularly in Bangladesh. Yunus emphasized the potential for false information to destabilize the nation, highlighting the country’s dense population and the susceptibility of its social fabric to malicious narratives. He stressed the urgency of finding effective mechanisms to combat the spread of hatred and misinformation, especially in the lead-up to the upcoming general elections.
Yunus’s appeal comes during a meeting with Simon Milner, Meta’s Vice President of Public Policy for the Asia-Pacific region, and Ruzan Sarwar, Public Policy Manager. Milner assured Yunus that Meta is committed to working with the Bangladeshi government and civil society organizations to mitigate the spread of disinformation. He highlighted the company’s five-year history of dedicated efforts in Bangladesh, demonstrating their commitment to addressing the issue. The meeting signifies the gravity of the situation and the need for collaborative efforts to safeguard the integrity of information disseminated online.
Professor Yunus acknowledged the potential of Meta’s platforms to foster economic growth and connectivity but cautioned that their influence could be detrimental if ethical standards are not rigorously maintained. He stressed the importance of responsible platform governance in preventing the misuse of these powerful communication tools. Taiyeb urged Meta to enhance its Bangla language capabilities, particularly within its Large Language Model (LLM) AI systems. He argued that the current reliance on English-centric AI models hinders effective content moderation and sentiment analysis in Bangla, limiting the platform’s ability to identify and address harmful content effectively within the Bangladeshi context.
These concerns were further elaborated during a meeting between Meta officials and representatives from the Bangladesh Ministry of ICT. The ministry underscored the need for increased investment in Bangla-focused LLM and AI-driven sentiment analysis, advocating for more human reviewers proficient in Bangla to better tackle the nuanced challenges of fake news and misinformation. The ministry called for a greater understanding of local cultural sensitivities and language nuances in content moderation efforts, emphasizing the importance of context in accurately assessing potentially harmful content.
The Bangladeshi authorities also requested Meta to enhance its infrastructure within the country by deploying local cache servers and edge routers. This measure aims to improve service quality, optimize bandwidth usage, and strengthen the protection of users’ Personally Identifiable Information (PII). Furthermore, representatives from the Bangladesh Police and the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) stressed the need for faster response times in removing harmful content, requesting greater cooperation from Meta in proactive threat detection, crime detection, and timely alerts regarding misinformation, incitement to violence, and potential suicide risks. These requests highlight the critical role Meta plays in ensuring online safety and security within Bangladesh.
