RFK Jr.’s Samoan Visit Linked to Deadly Measles Outbreak: A Looming Threat to American Public Health?

A new report released by Protect Our Care, with a foreword by Hawaii Governor Josh Green, paints a disturbing picture of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s role in the 2019 Samoan measles outbreak, raising serious concerns about his potential appointment as the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The report directly links Kennedy’s visit to Samoa, where he disseminated anti-vaccine rhetoric, to the subsequent measles epidemic that claimed 83 lives, predominantly children. Kennedy’s persistent refusal to acknowledge his role in the tragedy and his continued opposition to vaccination underscore the potential dangers his leadership at HHS could pose to American public health.

The report meticulously details the timeline of events leading up to the outbreak. In 2018, two Samoan children tragically died after receiving improperly administered MMR vaccines. This incident, while caused by medical negligence, was exploited by Kennedy’s organization, Children’s Health Defense, to fuel anti-vaccine sentiment. Despite subsequent clarification regarding the true cause of death, the organization failed to correct the misinformation, further contributing to declining vaccination rates in Samoa. This groundwork of distrust created a fertile environment for the measles virus to thrive.

Kennedy’s visit to Samoa in June 2019, orchestrated by a local anti-vaccine activist and funded by Children’s Health Defense, served as a catalyst for the unfolding crisis. Meeting with government officials and aligning himself with local anti-vaccine proponents, Kennedy amplified the existing vaccine hesitancy, undermining public health efforts and contributing to the conditions that allowed the measles outbreak to take hold.  The subsequent epidemic, declared a national emergency in November 2019, resulted in over 5,700 measles cases and 83 deaths, with a staggering 87% of fatalities occurring among children under five.

The report further highlights the efforts of anti-vaccine activists linked to Kennedy who, amidst the outbreak, employed misinformation and aggressive rhetoric to obstruct government attempts to control the spread of measles. This organized resistance to public health measures exacerbated the crisis and hindered the implementation of life-saving interventions. The report argues that Kennedy’s actions in Samoa serve as a chilling preview of the potential consequences of his leadership at HHS, warning of a resurgence of preventable diseases and a catastrophic erosion of public trust in established scientific principles.

Governor Josh Green, in his foreword, expresses grave concerns about Kennedy’s potential appointment, stating that "vaccine misinformation is deadly, period." Having witnessed the devastating aftermath of the Samoan measles outbreak, Governor Green emphasizes the direct link between Kennedy’s anti-vaccine activism and the loss of life. He unequivocally declares Kennedy unfit to lead the nation’s healthcare system, warning of the dire consequences for American public health under his leadership.

Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach echoes these concerns, asserting that Kennedy poses a "life-or-death threat" to millions of Americans. Dach highlights Kennedy’s radical stance on vaccines, citing his claim that "no vaccine is safe and effective," and warns that such beliefs at the helm of HHS would inevitably lead to a resurgence of preventable diseases like measles and polio. The report underscores Kennedy’s broader anti-science positions, including his support for defunding vital medical research, as further evidence of his unsuitability for the position. It concludes with a stark warning that appointing Kennedy to HHS would be catastrophic for the health and well-being of the American people, setting the stage for a public health crisis of unprecedented proportions.

The report urges immediate action to prevent Kennedy’s confirmation, arguing that his appointment would represent a grave betrayal of public trust and a direct threat to the health and safety of Americans. It calls upon policymakers and the public to recognize the immense risk posed by Kennedy’s anti-science ideology and to prioritize evidence-based policies that protect the health and well-being of all Americans, especially the most vulnerable. The report serves as a critical warning against the dangers of misinformation and the importance of safeguarding public health infrastructure against those who prioritize ideology over scientific evidence.
