Uttar Pradesh Police Combat Misinformation Blitz Targeting Maha Kumbh Mela
The Uttar Pradesh Police have launched a concerted effort to combat the spread of misinformation surrounding the Maha Kumbh Mela, a major Hindu pilgrimage taking place in Prayagraj. Over the past month, authorities have initiated legal action against 53 social media accounts for disseminating fake news and misleading content related to the event. This crackdown comes following a directive from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to curb the proliferation of false information that could potentially disrupt the peaceful conduct of the religious gathering.
The police have identified a pattern of misleading posts, often involving recycled videos from unrelated incidents, falsely attributed to the Maha Kumbh. These fabricated narratives range from exaggerated claims of fires and stampedes to malicious attempts to incite communal tensions. DGP Prashant Kumar outlined the police strategy, which includes constant cyber patrolling by both the Uttar Pradesh Police and specialized agencies to monitor and counter misinformation campaigns circulating on various social media platforms. This proactive approach aims to identify and address false information swiftly before it can gain traction and cause undue alarm.
One prominent example of misinformation involved a video of a fire incident in Egypt from 2020, falsely depicted as a recent fire at the Maha Kumbh bus stand. Another manipulated video from a film promotion event in Patna was misrepresented as an attack on army personnel by religious individuals at the Kumbh. These incidents highlight the deliberate nature of the misinformation campaign and its potential to incite unrest and damage the reputation of the event.
The police have documented numerous instances of fabricated stories circulating online. One account falsely claimed a routine fire drill was an actual fire incident. A misleading video from Nepal was circulated, falsely implying that bodies of stampede victims were being transported due to inadequate infrastructure. Another fabricated narrative alleged that organs were being harvested from deceased attendees. A crowd management measure was falsely portrayed as a stampede, and a video from Jharkhand was misrepresented as Uttar Pradesh Police assaulting pilgrims searching for missing relatives. A 2021 video from Ghazipur was falsely presented as showing bodies of stampede victims in the Ganges River.
To counter these persistent misinformation campaigns, the Uttar Pradesh Police have implemented a 24/7 cyber patrolling system specifically designed to detect and address false information related to the Maha Kumbh. Legal action is being taken against the identified accounts, and authorities are actively collaborating with social media companies to trace the individuals responsible for originating and disseminating these fabricated narratives. DGP Kumar emphasized the importance of responsible social media usage and urged citizens to verify information before sharing it online. He cautioned that spreading misinformation can result in legal consequences.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest spiritual gathering, commenced on January 13 and will continue until February 26. Held every 12 years at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj, the event has already attracted nearly 50 crore (500 million) visitors. The Uttar Pradesh Police are determined to maintain the sanctity and security of this significant religious event by actively combating the ongoing wave of online misinformation aimed at disrupting the peaceful pilgrimage.
