Illinois Secretary of State Addresses Misinformation About REAL ID Deadline, Reassures Public

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias moved to quell public anxiety and address widespread misinformation regarding the upcoming REAL ID deadline. In a press conference held at the state capitol, Giannoulias stressed that the deadline for obtaining a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card remains May 3, 2025. He highlighted that residents are not required to rush to Driver Services facilities unless their current license or ID is expiring. This clarification comes in response to a surge in public inquiries and reports of long lines at facilities, fueled largely by inaccurate information circulating online and through word-of-mouth. Giannoulias emphasized the importance of relying on official government sources for accurate information and urged Illinoisans to avoid panic and misinformation.

The Secretary of State acknowledged the inconvenience some residents experienced due to the recent influx of applicants driven by misinformation. He reiterated that unless an individual’s current ID is expiring, there is no immediate need to apply for a REAL ID. Giannoulias underscored that the May 3, 2025, deadline provides ample time for residents to obtain the compliant identification. To further streamline the process and mitigate potential future surges, Giannoulias announced a series of measures being implemented by his office. These include expanding online renewal options, increasing staffing at Driver Services facilities, and enhancing public awareness campaigns to disseminate accurate information regarding the REAL ID requirements and deadlines.

Giannoulias detailed the acceptable forms of identification for domestic air travel after the May 2025 deadline. These include a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state identification card, a valid U.S. passport, a military ID, and other Transportation Security Administration (TSA)-approved forms of identification. He emphasized that standard driver’s licenses and state IDs will no longer be accepted for air travel within the United States after the deadline. This crucial distinction, he noted, is often misconstrued, leading to unnecessary concern and confusion among residents. The Secretary of State’s office is committed to educating the public about these requirements and providing resources to facilitate a smooth transition to the REAL ID system.

The Secretary of State outlined the process for obtaining a REAL ID, highlighting the documentation required. Applicants need to provide proof of identity, such as a U.S. birth certificate or passport; proof of social security number, like a social security card or W-2 form; and two proofs of Illinois residency, such as a utility bill or bank statement. He encouraged residents to visit the Secretary of State’s website to review the complete list of acceptable documents and utilize the pre-application feature to expedite their visit to a Driver Services facility. This online tool allows individuals to input their required information in advance, reducing processing time and wait times at physical locations.

Addressing concerns about potential future delays and long lines, Giannoulias outlined his office’s proactive strategies to manage the anticipated increase in REAL ID applications as the deadline approaches. These include ongoing evaluations of staffing levels at Driver Services facilities, exploring options for expanding facility hours and operating days, and continued enhancement of online services. He also emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns in managing the flow of applicants, encouraging residents to apply well in advance of their travel dates and avoid waiting until the last minute. The Secretary of State expressed his commitment to continually assessing the situation and implementing necessary adjustments to ensure a smooth and efficient process for Illinois residents.

Giannoulias concluded his press conference by reiterating the importance of accurate information and urging the public to consult official sources for updates regarding the REAL ID program. He emphasized that his office is committed to making the transition as seamless as possible and providing necessary support to Illinois residents. He encouraged residents to visit the Secretary of State’s website, call the dedicated REAL ID hotline, or visit a local Driver Services facility for further information and assistance. The message resonated clearly: There is no need to panic, ample time remains, and the Secretary of State’s office is dedicated to facilitating a smooth and efficient REAL ID application process for all Illinoisans.
