Advocating for Knowledge: Nuclear-Aware Africa Seeks Strategic Partnership with NAEC to Clear Misconceptions
In a proactive move to reshape the narrative surrounding nuclear science, Nuclear-Aware Africa (NAA), a non-governmental organization dedicated to the peaceful application of nuclear technology, has formally sought a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC). During a recent courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, the delegation emphasized the urgent need to bridge the gap between scientific reality and public perception. The primary goal of this alliance is to combat the pervasive misinformation and disinformation that often characterize public discourse regarding nuclear energy and its associated technologies in Nigeria and the broader African continent.
The delegation, led by NAA’s Programme Director, Ruth Shimaor, engaged in high-level discussions with the leadership of the NAEC. Shimaor articulated that fostering a collaborative relationship with the Commission is critical to transforming how Nigerians perceive nuclear advancements. By pooling resources and expertise, the two organizations aim to launch comprehensive public engagement initiatives designed to illuminate the tangible socio-economic development prospects offered by peaceful nuclear technologies, thereby creating an informed populace that understands the utility of these sciences beyond traditional skepticism.
The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, represented by key staff members, welcomed the advocacy efforts of the NAA. Mr. Amos Obeya, the Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit (IPRU) at NAEC, highlighted the Commission’s existing efforts to engage various stakeholders and communities. He further advised the visiting team to broaden their advocacy reach by collaborating with the Atomic Energy Committees of the National Assembly, suggesting that a multi-stakeholder approach would be essential in navigating the complexities of public sensitization and policy influence.
Recognition for NAA’s work also came from the technical leadership within the Commission. Engr. Auwal Bissalah, Head of ICL-NAEC, specifically lauded the organization for utilizing contemporary media formats, such as its educational podcast series, to distill complex nuclear concepts for the average citizen. This validation underscores the importance of diverse communication strategies in deconstructing the technical jargon that often alienates the public from understanding the significant roles nuclear science plays in their daily lives.
The Acting Chairman and CEO of NAEC, Engr. Dr. Anthony Ekedegwa, expressed strong support for the partnership, urging the NAA to remain steadfast in its mission. He underscored the necessity of debunking myths that cast a shadow over essential peaceful applications of nuclear technology. Dr. Ekedegwa pointed to the vital roles nuclear science plays in critical sectors such as healthcare—specifically regarding cancer treatment and radiopharmacy—as well as its potential to revolutionize agricultural productivity and food security. He noted that the public must be made aware of how these advancements, including the country’s Multi-Purpose Research Reactor, translate into real-world benefits for the nation.
Looking toward the future, the dialogue also touched upon the strategic importance of integrating nuclear energy into Nigeria’s national energy mix. Dr. Ekedegwa highlighted the socio-economic advantages of this integration, framing it as a necessary step for sustainable development. Through this proposed collaboration with the Nuclear-Aware Africa organization, the Commission hopes to build a foundation of public trust and technical literacy, ensuring that the discourse on Nigeria’s nuclear future is driven by facts, scientific progress, and a shared vision for national prosperity.
