KINGWOOD, W.Va. — A tense search for a missing Lincoln County teenager reached a successful conclusion Thursday afternoon when 15-year-old Holly Sanders of Ranger was located safely at a McDonald’s in Preston County. West Virginia State Police confirmed that the young girl, whose disappearance had sparked an urgent multi-county investigation since earlier this week, was found in the company of an 18-year-old male and another juvenile. Following her recovery, Sanders was promptly reunited with her parents, bringing an end to her family’s harrowing ordeal.

The path to finding Sanders, however, was marred by a series of complications and deliberate attempts to misdirect authorities. State police investigators noted that the case began in earnest on Wednesday, but early leads quickly proved to be fabrications. Trooper C.L. Lowery, speaking to MetroNews, explained that the situation involved “many twists and turns,” with law enforcement repeatedly hitting dead ends caused by individuals providing false accounts of the girl’s whereabouts.

Central to the investigation’s initial confusion was misinformation provided by a juvenile friend of the victim and her father, 47-year-old Carson Toppins of Milton. Investigators stated that Toppins and his daughter originally claimed they had seen Sanders entering a sedan with two unidentified men at the Huntington Mall in Barboursville at 7:00 p.m. on the day of her disappearance. This account was later completely debunked by police, who determined that the teenager had never been to the shopping center, effectively stalling the search effort during a critical window of time.

As a direct consequence of these false statements, law enforcement acted swiftly to hold the involved parties accountable. Carson Toppins has been taken into custody and charged with providing false information and obstructing an officer. He is currently being held at the Western Regional Jail on a $2,000 bond. Furthermore, authorities have indicated that additional charges are pending against his daughter for her alleged role in obstructing the police investigation into the girl’s whereabouts.

Further analysis by investigators revealed that the timeline of Sanders’ disappearance was significantly different than initially reported. While the misinformation pointed to events in Barboursville, troopers discovered that the 15-year-old had actually been missing since Monday. Law enforcement officials determined that the last verified sighting of Sanders prior to her discovery in Kingwood occurred at a Kroger in Putnam County, within the Scott Depot area. This revelation highlights the critical importance of accurate information during the opening stages of a missing persons case.

As the immediate danger to the teenager has passed, the investigation now shifts toward potential criminal culpability regarding those with whom she was found. State police stated that they will work closely with prosecutors in both Putnam and-Preston counties to determine appropriate charges against the 18-year-old male and the juvenile found with Sanders at the McDonald’s. While the girl is now safe, officials emphasize that this remains an active and ongoing investigation, with further developments expected as authorities piece together the details of the past several days.
