State Police Seek Missing Teenager as Friend’s Father Faces Charges for Providing False Information

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia State Police have launched an urgent search for 15-year-old Holly Sanders, a teenager from Ranger in Lincoln County, who has been missing since Monday. As law enforcement officials work to piece together the events surrounding her disappearance, the investigation has taken a complicated turn, shifting from a standard missing persons case to one involving criminal interference. Authorities are now calling upon the public to assist in locating the girl, whose whereabouts remain unknown as of late this week.

The investigation hit a significant roadblock when investigators discovered that they were being misled by individuals close to the situation. Trooper C.L. Lowery revealed that police were initially provided with a specific narrative regarding Sanders’ final moments before she vanished. According to that initial report, provided by a female juvenile friend and her 47-year-old father, Carson Toppins of Milton, Sanders had allegedly been seen entering a vehicle with two unidentified men at the Huntington Mall on Wednesday.

However, after conducting a thorough follow-up, state police determined that the accounts provided by the pair were entirely fabricated. Trooper Lowery described the testimony as deliberate misinformation, which significantly hampered the early stages of the investigation. “It was just misinformation given to us by involved parties,” Lowery stated, noting that the false leads disrupted the timeline and the allocation of critical law enforcement resources during the first few days of the search.

As a direct consequence of the false statements, authorities have taken legal action against those involved. Carson Toppins has been formally charged with providing false information and obstructing an officer, and he is currently being held at the Western Regional Jail on a $2,000 bond. Meanwhile, additional charges are reportedly pending against his daughter, the juvenile friend who participated in the misleading report. These arrests underscore the gravity of the investigation and the police’s low tolerance for interference in high-priority missing persons cases.

With the false leads now discarded, investigators are working to establish a legitimate timeline of Sanders’ movements. Trooper Lowery confirmed that the focus of the search has shifted to the Putnam County area, specifically the community of Scott Depot, where the teenager was most recently spotted. Officials are currently analyzing surveillance footage from various locations in the vicinity, including a Kroger store in Teays Valley, which is believed to be one of the last places she was seen before disappearing from view.

At this time, state police have stated that it remains unclear whether Sanders is in immediate danger, but her age and the circumstances of her disappearance remain a top concern for the Huntington Detachment. The search efforts are ongoing as troopers continue to follow up on new leads and analyze evidence gathered from the area. The West Virginia State Police are urging anyone with legitimate information regarding Holly Sanders’ whereabouts to contact their Huntington office immediately at (304) 528-5555.
