The rapid proliferation of digital disinformation and the emergence of sophisticated artificial intelligence tools have created a volatile online environment that poses significant threats to national and global security. Recognizing this urgency, Rareș Oancea, a 10th-grade philology student from the “Mihai Eminescu” National College in Iași, Romania, has developed “TruthSeeker.” This AI-driven initiative serves as a digital watchdog, designed to analyze online articles, images, and videos. Unlike basic fact-checking tools, TruthSeeker attempts to provide users with the broader context of information, including the track record of publishing sources and the underlying manipulation techniques used to distort reality for political or malicious ends.
The impetus for this project arose during the 2024 Romanian presidential campaign, a period characterized by a massive surge in propaganda and artificial inflation of certain candidates’ public images. Oancea observed widespread, coordinated disinformation campaigns that spread rapidly across social media, often utilizing “bot-like” behaviors or emotionally charged rhetoric to manipulate public perception. Motivated by the absurdity of fabricated stories—ranging from staged heroic narratives to outright lies about geopolitical events—the teenager decided to transition from a passive observer to an active defender of truth, choosing to build technical solutions rather than engaging in futile online arguments.
TruthSeeker is fundamentally designed to empower personal critical thinking rather than automate belief. The platform functions by cross-referencing information across multiple sources, analyzing the linguistic tone of articles, and verifying the technical integrity of media files. As an AI-based system, it avoids the subjective biases that often plague human-led discourse. Oancea has specifically engineered the platform to be more advanced than standard Large Language Models; it possesses a unique capability to identify individuals in photographs through context-aware light and shadow analysis, allowing it to debunk digitally altered imagery that might otherwise deceive the public.
Beyond still images, the platform demonstrates prowess in audio-video forensics. In one notable instance, TruthSeeker successfully analyzed propaganda videos shared on Telegram that depicted aggressive soldier behavior in Ukraine. By extracting and analyzing the hidden audio context, the AI confirmed that the soldiers were actually asking about the well-being of civilians rather than acting with malice, as the misleading descriptions claimed. Furthermore, the platform helps trace the origin of such content by identifying patterns of behavior across specific news channels and platforms, thereby helping users understand if a piece of information is part of an orchestrated disinformation campaign.
Despite the platform’s success, Oancea remains pragmatic about the challenges ahead. He acknowledges that artificial intelligence is not infallible and that the sheer speed at which fake news travels—reportedly six times faster than verified news—is a daunting obstacle. Funding remains the project’s primary hurdle, as Oancea has personally invested thousands of euros to maintain the necessary infrastructure and server power. He remains steadfast in his commitment to keeping the platform accessible to the public for free, prioritizing social impact over profit, while simultaneously seeking sustainable ways to scale the technology against the growing “disinformation industry.”
Looking toward the future, Oancea aims to expand TruthSeeker by developing a dedicated mobile app and a browser extension. These tools would allow users to verify content in real-time as they browse social media, offering seamless, instant analysis of any post or article. Oancea envisions his project not as a competitor to professional fact-checking organizations, but as a complementary tool that enables users to perform their own due diligence. By creating an automated, transparent, and user-verifiable system, he hopes to institutionalize defense against disinformation and ensure that citizens have the technological resources required to discern truth in an increasingly synthetic information landscape.
