The Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company (Gescom) is spearheading a digital transformation in the power sector by championing the institutionalization of smart meter technology across its jurisdiction. As modern technology continues to integrate deeply into the utility landscape, officials describe the rollout of these devices as a pivotal development intended to modernize grid management and elevate the standard of customer service. By replacing outdated analog infrastructure, the initiative aims to foster a transparent and highly efficient relationship between the utility company and its consumer base.
Unlike traditional electricity meters that require manual intervention, smart meters serve as sophisticated communication tools capable of recording energy consumption data in real-time. This continuous flow of data is transmitted directly to the utility’s central systems, effectively eliminating the potential for human error associated with manual meter readings. This automation ensures that billing cycles are both faster and more accurate, providing consumers with a clearer understanding of their electricity usage patterns while simultaneously streamlining the utility’s operational workflows.
Adoption efforts are already well underway, with 8,185 consumers within the Gescom network having transitioned to the new technology. The current deployment data shows a diverse distribution: 3,019 units are supporting temporary connections—for which smart meters are now mandatory—while the remainder includes 40 prepaid installations and 5,126 postpaid units. This phased integration allows Gescom to test the reliability of the grid under varying usage scenarios, ensuring that both residential and temporary service needs are met with equal precision and technical oversight.
To facilitate widespread access, Gescom has standardized the financial requirements for installation. The pricing structure, which incorporates the meter box and all applicable GST, is set at Rs 4,983 for single-phase meters, Rs 8,800 for three-phase units, and Rs 27,500 for the more robust three-phase CT-operated meters. By offering both prepaid and postpaid billing options, the utility provides consumers with the flexibility to manage their energy budgets in a way that best suits their financial circumstances, further incentivizing the move away from traditional billing methods.
Recognizing the necessity of building consumer trust, Gescom has established specialized smart meter testing laboratories in the Kalaburagi, Ballari, and Raichur districts. These centers serve as hubs for quality control, where the functionality and accuracy of every device can be verified through scientific testing. Consumers who harbor concerns regarding their meter readings can request an official assessment by paying a modest fee of Rs 100 for single-phase or Rs 200 for three-phase equipment at their local subdivision office, ensuring that any discrepancies are resolved with complete transparency.
Gescom Managing Director Shashidhar Kurer has underscored the broader strategic importance of this transition, noting that the move is essential for enhancing operational efficiency and curbing the high costs associated with technical and commercial losses. Beyond financial gains, the initiative is designed to nudge consumers toward more conscientious energy consumption habits. Kurer also issued a call for public vigilance, urging residents to disregard misinformation circulating about the technology and to rely exclusively on official communications to ensure they are fully informed about the long-term benefits of the transition.
