A wave of misinformation swept through the Rautahat district late Wednesday night, as a viral social media post successfully triggered widespread panic and confusion. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Satya Thapa of the Area Police Office in Chandranigahapur spent the night fielding an endless stream of inquiries from concerned citizens, friends, and relatives. The primary cause of the alarm was a video circulating on Facebook and other platforms that allegedly depicted a police vehicle being torched by protesters in the local streets. As the footage spread rapidly, it cultivated a dangerous atmosphere of uncertainty, forcing law enforcement to divert critical resources toward debunking the digital falsehood.

The investigation into the source of the chaos revealed that the footage was not a recent capture but rather recycled content from a previous era of civil unrest. According to DSP Thapa, the video actually depicted an incident that occurred on September 9 of last year, during the height of the “Gen Z” protests. Miscreants had taken the old footage and deceptively edited or re-contextualized it to appear as if it were transpiring in real-time, deliberately exploiting the current climate of heightened tension throughout the country to maximize engagement and incite local anxiety.

The ramifications of this “clickbait” mentality were severe, as the unchecked pursuit of likes, comments, and shares threatened to undermine public order. The District Police Office in Gaur felt compelled to issue a formal public statement to quell the hysteria. DSP Basanta Gautam emphasized that the spread of such manipulative content poses a direct risk to social harmony, noting that the police are now actively monitoring individuals who utilize digital platforms to intentionally orchestrate unrest or manufacture public fear during volatile periods.

Regional leadership also weighed in on the danger of the digital disinformation campaign, with Madhesh Province Finance Minister Yubraj Bhattarai publicly condemning the act. Taking to social media to call for restraint, Bhattarai noted that attempting to destabilize community relations by circulating dated, inflammatory footage under the guise of current news is wholly unacceptable. He urged the public to exercise maximum caution and skepticism, insisting that citizens should rely solely on verified, factual reporting rather than falling victim to viral sensationalism.

This incident serves as a stark warning regarding the fragility of public discourse in the digital age. When the speed of information dissemination outpaces the speed of verification, malicious actors find a potent weapon in social media to sow discord. The ease with which an archived video can be weaponized to convince an entire district of a non-existent threat underscores the critical need for digital literacy and greater responsibility among social media users, who often inadvertently act as vehicles for misinformation under the guise of spreading the news.

Moving forward, authorities are signaling a more rigorous approach to those who prioritize virality over public security. By threatening to hold those responsible for the spread of destabilizing misinformation accountable, the local administration hopes to mitigate future risks to social stability. As the nation experiences broader periods of protest and political uncertainty, both the police and government officials are calling for a heightened communal awareness, demanding that the public prioritize accuracy over the allure of sensationalist content to prevent further disruption to daily life.
