The necessity for this digital infrastructure was underscored by a high-profile incident on July 26, when a viral post falsely attributed comments regarding foreign funding of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)-led protests to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. The deceptive post claimed that Jaiswal had explicitly stated that intelligence investigations revealed “no foreign funding” behind the ongoing demonstrations. This fabrication risked misleading public discourse on a sensitive domestic political issue, forcing the ministry to intervene immediately to restore the record and clarify the spokesperson’s actual stance.
In response to the viral misrepresentation, the MEA’s X-based fact-checking unit released a comprehensive rebuttal, including a video clip of Jaiswal’s official bi-weekly briefing. The footage confirmed that the spokesperson had actually stated he had “no information” on the matter to share at the time, directly debunking the claim that he had cleared the protests of foreign involvement.
