Shusha Global Media Forum Addresses the Critical Role of Responsible Journalism in a Digital Age

SHUSHA, Azerbaijan – The 4th Shusha Global Media Forum convened this week to address the evolving landscape of international communication, positioning the media as a foundational pillar of resilience and mutual understanding in contemporary society. As global events continue to manifest in increasingly complex ways, stakeholders gathered to emphasize that responsible communication is no longer merely a professional standard but a critical necessity for preventing conflict and fostering long-term trust between nations.

Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, delivered a pivotal address during the event’s second day. He highlighted the dual nature of our modern digital ecosystem, noting that while social media has democratized communication and granted citizens unprecedented opportunities to express their voices, these same platforms have simultaneously facilitated the rapid proliferation of disinformation, political manipulation, and societal pressure.

The core challenge identified by Hajiyev is the growing difficulty of verifying truth in an era saturated with synthesized content. “Digital technologies have given people the opportunity to be heard, while at the same time making it more difficult to distinguish facts from false information,” Hajiyev noted. This volatility in the information ecosystem poses a direct threat to public discourse, as the line between objective reporting and manufactured narratives becomes increasingly blurred for digital audiences worldwide.

Central to the discussion was the recognition that modern warfare has transcended conventional battlefield boundaries. Hajiyev underscored that contemporary conflicts are now fought aggressively within the information space, raising the stakes for journalistic integrity. In this context, the demand for reliable, accurate, and ethical reporting has never been higher, as the ability to provide truthful accounts serves as the primary defense against the strategic use of misinformation designed to destabilize communities.

Historical precedents serve as a stern reminder of how media narratives can profoundly shape public perception and, by extension, the trajectory of geopolitical events. By analyzing past crises, experts at the forum reiterated that responsible journalism acts as a guardian of historical truth. Without a commitment to rigorous fact-checking and ethical standards, media outlets risk becoming tools for the distortion of reality, which can have catastrophic consequences for peace and international stability.

Concluding his remarks, Hajiyev issued a call to action, emphasizing that the path toward global stability requires a concerted effort to rebuild trust through dialogue, rigorous professionalism, and mutual respect. He expressed optimism that the recommendations emerging from the 4th Shusha Global Media Forum would set a new standard, encouraging the global media community to prioritize transparency and accountability to create a more resilient and responsible information environment for future generations.
