EU Bolsters Northern Nigeria’s Defenses Against Disinformation and Manipulation

ABUJA, Nigeria – In a concerted effort to combat the escalating threat of foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI), the European Union (EU) has concluded a comprehensive two-day training workshop for 125 journalists, civil society organizations (CSOs), and students across northern Nigeria. The training, held in Abuja, underscores the EU’s commitment to strengthening resilience against disinformation campaigns that pose a significant risk to democracy, stability, and security in the region.

Gautier Mignot, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), emphasized the gravity of the disinformation threat, highlighting its potential to incite hatred, fuel societal divisions, and create rifts between nations. He noted the insidious nature of these campaigns, which are often meticulously designed to manipulate public opinion and undermine democratic processes. The workshop aimed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to identify, analyze, and debunk disinformation while upholding the principles of freedom of expression.

The training brought together a diverse group of participants, including journalists, students, CSO representatives, government officials, and diplomats. This multi-sectoral approach reflects the recognition that combating disinformation requires a collaborative effort involving all stakeholders. The EU’s strategy focuses on empowering these individuals to become agents of change within their respective communities, thereby fostering a wider network of resilience against disinformation across Nigeria. The participants are expected to cascade the training down to their peers, amplifying the impact and creating a ripple effect of awareness and preparedness.

Viktoras Dauksas, Head of the disinformation analysis center, debunk.org, underscored the increasing use of disinformation by authoritarian actors as a tool to manipulate citizens and destabilize countries. He emphasized the critical role of journalists in safeguarding democracy by acting as gatekeepers of accurate information and holding power to account. The training provided participants with practical tools and techniques to identify systematic disinformation campaigns, report accurately on complex issues, and empower citizens to make informed decisions, thereby preventing manipulation and fostering a more resilient information ecosystem.

Johannes Lehne, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Abuja, drew attention to the specific challenges posed by disinformation in northern Nigeria, where insecurity is often exacerbated by misinformation. He highlighted how false narratives can mislead citizens, fuel extremist ideologies, and contribute to humanitarian crises and migration challenges that extend beyond Nigeria’s borders, impacting even Europe. This shared concern underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing the transnational threat of disinformation. The training aimed to equip participants with the critical thinking skills to discern fact from fiction and to understand the broader geopolitical context in which disinformation operates.

The EU’s initiative demonstrates its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to counter disinformation and strengthen its democratic institutions. By empowering journalists, CSOs, and students with the necessary skills and knowledge, the EU is fostering a more resilient information landscape and contributing to a more informed and engaged citizenry. The training serves as a crucial step in building a network of informed individuals who can effectively counter disinformation narratives, promote critical thinking, and safeguard democratic values. This collaborative approach recognizes that a robust and resilient information ecosystem is essential for fostering stability, security, and democratic progress in Nigeria and the wider region. The EU’s ongoing commitment to this critical issue reflects its recognition of the transnational nature of the disinformation threat and the importance of international cooperation in addressing this challenge.
