Disputed Covid-19 Excess Mortality Study Retracted Following Scrutiny over Vaccine Misinformation

PARIS, Aug 12 — A controversial study analysing excess deaths during the Covid-19 pandemic, which had been widely cited by vaccine sceptics and anti-vaccination campaigners, has been formally retracted by the British journal’s publisher. The BMJ Group, which oversees the journal BMJ Public Health, announced the retraction today, saying the paper had been removed “on the grounds of misinformation on causes of death and limited original work conducted by the authors.” This dramatic reversal marks the final, most severe step in scientific publishing: a full retraction, which removes the paper from the scientific record and indicates that the findings can no longer be considered reliable. The study, originally published in 2024, had ignited fierce debate within the medical and scientific communities. Its central claim was that excess mortality in Western countries remained abnormally high for three consecutive years after the peak of the pandemic had subsided, even though governments had implemented containment measures and vaccination campaigns. While the authors did not explicitly say the vaccines caused those excess deaths, the wording left enough ambiguity for anti-vaccine groups to distort the findings and present them as evidence that Covid-19 immunisation programmes were linked to unusually high numbers of deaths. The BMJ Group’s decision to retract the paper follows months of scrutiny, with the publisher’s own investigation concluding that the study fell short of accepted standards in several key respects.

The study, titled around the analysis of excess mortality in the “Western World,” was published in BMJ Public Health, a peer-reviewed journal focused on public health research. Excess mortality refers to the difference between the number of deaths observed during a given period and the number that would normally be expected under baseline conditions. It is a crucial metric during and after a health crisis, used to measure the overall mortality impact of events such as pandemics. The researchers reportedly looked at data from several Western countries over a three-year period, drawing conclusions about mortality trends after the initial Covid-19 emergency subsided. According to the published abstract and subsequent commentary, the study concluded that “excess mortality has remained high in the Western World for three consecutive years, despite the implementation of containment measures and Covid-19 vaccines.” The authors were mainly affiliated with the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in the Netherlands, a leading research institution. The phrase “despite” created a troubling narrative: it could be interpreted as suggesting that public health measures, including vaccination, were ineffective or worse. However, the paper did not actually establish a causal connection between the vaccines and the observed excess deaths. It was this ambiguity—combined with a perceived lack of rigorous original analysis—that drew intense criticism from epidemiologists, statisticians, and public health officials around the world.

The retraction is especially consequential because of how the study was weaponised in the broader misinformation ecosystem. Within weeks of its publication, the paper was seized upon by anti-vaccine websites, social media influencers, and sceptic groups, who repeatedly claimed that it “proved” a direct link between Covid vaccines and mass deaths. These claims were false. The study did not say that, and the authors themselves did not make such an assertion. Yet the paper’s vague framing, particularly its mention of “Covid-19 vaccines” alongside the persistence of high excess mortality, was enough for bad-faith actors to present it as authoritative confirmation of their beliefs. In reality, vast epidemiological evidence, including data from dozens of countries, has repeatedly demonstrated that Covid-19 vaccines saved millions of lives from 2020 onward, dramatically reducing hospitalisations, severe illness, and deaths. The vaccines were instrumental in bringing the pandemic under control in many parts of the world. Public health experts expressed alarm that a single flawed paper, published in a respected journal, could be manipulated to undermine trust in vaccination at precisely a time when public confidence was already fragile. They urged the BMJ Group to act quickly and clearly, fearing that continued availability of the study would cause further harm.

The scientific criticisms of the study were substantial and went beyond the issue of misinterpretation. Researchers pointed out that the methodology used to calculate excess mortality was seriously flawed. Excess mortality calculations are notoriously sensitive to the choice of baseline period, statistical model, and adjustment for age and demographic changes. Many experts argued that the authors had used an inappropriate baseline, failing to account for significant shifts in population age structures and long-term trends in disease prevalence. Others noted that the study’s geographic scope was limited and that its “Western World” designation was ill-defined. More importantly, the authors did not provide sufficient original data or analyses; the BMJ Group’s retraction notice specifically cited “limited original work conducted by the authors.” This suggests that the paper may have largely repackaged existing public data without adding meaningful new insight or rigorous independent verification. The lack of transparency around the data sources and analytical choices made it impossible for other researchers to reproduce the findings. When a paper cannot be reproduced, it holds far less scientific weight. The combination of ambiguous conclusions and questionable methodology made the paper vulnerable to criticism from all sides, even though some commentators defended the general idea that excess mortality remained elevated after the pandemic, citing other causes such as disruptions to healthcare systems, delayed diagnoses, and the long-term effects of Covid-19 infection.

The process leading to this retraction began long before today’s announcement. Shortly after the paper was published in 2024, the BMJ Group issued an “expression of concern” about the study, signalling that there were serious issues that needed to be addressed. At the same time, the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology, where three of the study’s four authors were based, launched its own independent investigation into the work. The institution’s involvement underlined the seriousness of the allegations. During the investigation period, the paper remained online, but with a clear warning to readers that its contents were unreliable. Scientific publishers usually reserve an expression of concern for cases that are under active investigation but where the details remain unclear. In this case, the investigation concluded that the problems were severe enough to warrant full retraction. The BMJ Group confirmed that “the institution and two of the four authors of the research support the decision to retract the work.” This is a notable detail: while the other two authors apparently opposed or did not agree with the retraction, the weight of the institution and a majority of the research team aligned with the publisher’s decision. A full retraction sends an unambiguous message to the scientific community and the public that the paper should not be cited or used as a basis for policy, clinical practice, or further research.

The retraction of this study carries wider implications for scientific integrity, public trust, and the ongoing battle against health misinformation. First, it demonstrates that the self-correcting mechanisms of science can work, even when a paper has gained widespread public attention. Journals are sometimes accused of being too slow to correct the record, but in this case the BMJ Group eventually took the most decisive action available. Second, it highlights a dangerous pattern: flawed research, even when not intentionally misleading, can be repurposed by anti-vaccine movements to advance agendas far beyond what the authors intended. This places an extra responsibility on journals, institutions, and researchers to be meticulous about language, methodology, and data transparency, especially when findings touch on politically or emotionally charged topics. The study’s retraction does not mean that all questions about excess mortality after the pandemic have been resolved; indeed, legitimate researchers continue to study the long-term health impacts of Covid-19, including the effects on mortality. However, this particular paper will no longer be allowed to appear as evidence in those debates. The BMJ Group’s action underscores that the standard of proof must remain high, and that vague or misleading conclusions will not survive rigorous scrutiny. For the public, the lesson is to approach sensational claims with caution and to trust established scientific and medical bodies, which continue to uphold the life-saving value of vaccines even as they correct the occasional misstep in the academic record.
