Gaborone Declares War on Disinformation: Southern African Journalists Unite to Safeguard Truth and Democracy
Gaborone, Botswana – Amidst a growing tide of disinformation sweeping across the African continent, a coalition of journalist unions from Southern Africa converged in Gaborone for a crucial three-day workshop, marking a decisive step towards safeguarding the integrity of information and bolstering democracy in the region. From September 10-12, 2024, representatives from various media organizations gathered under the banner of “Combating Misinformation and Promoting Information Integrity,” a collaborative effort spearheaded by UNESCO’s Regional Office for Southern Africa and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
