Yunus Urges Meta to Combat Disinformation Threatening Bangladesh’s Social Harmony

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, in a meeting with Meta’s Vice President of Public Policy for Asia Pacific, Simon Milner, and Public Policy Manager Ruzan Sarwar, stressed the urgent need for the social media giant to effectively address the spread of disinformation on its platforms. Yunus highlighted the particular vulnerability of Bangladesh, a densely populated nation where the rapid dissemination of false information can quickly escalate into social unrest. He emphasized the potential for even a single misleading statement to destabilize the country and urged Meta to prioritize combating this threat.

Milner assured Yunus that Meta is committed to working with the Bangladeshi government to counter disinformation, particularly in the lead-up to the upcoming general election. He pointed to a dedicated team that has been focused on Bangladesh for the past five years and underscored their ongoing engagement with various authorities and rights groups within the country. This commitment, he emphasized, aims to ensure a safe and informed online environment during the election period.

Yunus acknowledged the powerful role Meta’s platforms, particularly Facebook, play in promoting business growth, but cautioned against the potential dangers if ethical standards are not rigorously maintained. He urged the company to prioritize the well-being of Bangladeshi society over profits. The Chief Adviser’s special assistant, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for Meta to enhance its Bangla language capabilities. He noted the limitations of Meta’s Large Language Model (LLM) AI, which primarily relies on English, making it less effective in addressing Bangla-language disinformation.

In a prior meeting with officials from Bangladesh’s ICT Ministry, Meta faced similar calls to increase investment in Bengali LLM and AI-based sentiment analysis. The ministry also urged Meta to bolster its ranks of human reviewers, particularly those proficient in Bangla, to effectively tackle fake news and harmful content. The need for cultural sensitivity in content moderation was also raised, highlighting the importance of reviewers who understand the nuances of the local context.

The Bangladeshi government has also requested Meta to enhance its infrastructure within the country. This includes deploying cache servers and edge routers to improve service efficiency, optimize bandwidth usage, and safeguard Personally Identifiable Information (PII). These measures are intended to enhance the user experience and ensure data security for Bangladeshi citizens.

Representatives from Bangladesh Police and the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) also participated in the meeting with Meta, emphasizing the need for swifter action against harmful online content. They stressed the importance of minimizing the time it takes to remove such posts, highlighting the potential for rapid escalation of online threats into real-world violence. The police also requested Meta’s cooperation in proactive threat detection, including early warnings for potential mob violence and suicide alerts. These requests reflect the growing concern over the potential for online activity to incite violence and harm individuals within Bangladesh.

The meeting between Professor Yunus and Meta officials underscores the increasing global concern over the spread of disinformation and its potential to destabilize societies. The discussions highlight the responsibility of social media platforms to actively combat this threat and work collaboratively with governments and civil society organizations. In Bangladesh, where the digital landscape is rapidly evolving, the need for robust measures to counter disinformation is particularly acute, and the collaboration between Meta and the Bangladeshi government is crucial to ensuring a safe and informed online environment. The focus on enhancing Bangla language capabilities, increasing local content moderation, and improving response times reflects a growing understanding of the specific challenges faced by Bangladesh and the need for tailored solutions to combat disinformation effectively. The ongoing dialogue between Meta and Bangladeshi authorities represents a crucial step towards creating a responsible and secure digital environment for the country’s citizens.
