Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence Propagates Further Disinformation

Armenia Accuses Azerbaijan of Spreading Disinformation Regarding Border Incident

YEREVAN, Armenia – Tensions continue to simmer between Armenia and Azerbaijan following a recent accusation of disinformation by the Armenian Ministry of Defence against its Azerbaijani counterpart. The dispute centers around an alleged ceasefire violation on March 16, in which Azerbaijan claims Armenian forces fired upon their positions in the southeastern part of the border. Armenia vehemently denies these claims, labeling them as fabricated and part of a broader pattern of disinformation disseminated by Azerbaijan.

The alleged incident, according to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence, occurred at approximately 6:35 p.m. on March 16. They assert that units of the Armenian Armed Forces opened fire on Azerbaijani positions, escalating tensions in the already volatile border region. However, the Armenian Ministry of Defence categorically refutes these allegations, stating they are entirely baseless and lack any factual basis.

This latest exchange of accusations further complicates the fragile peace between the two nations, who have a long history of conflict over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The 2020 war, which lasted for six weeks, resulted in significant casualties and territorial changes, leaving deep-seated mistrust and animosity between the two sides. While a ceasefire agreement was eventually brokered, sporadic clashes and accusations of violations continue to plague the border region.

Armenia’s accusation of disinformation underscores the deep-seated lack of trust between the two countries. This incident highlights the challenges in establishing a credible mechanism for investigating ceasefire violations and verifying conflicting reports. Armenia has actively sought to establish a joint mechanism with Azerbaijan to investigate such incidents and ensure accountability, but Azerbaijan has yet to formally respond to this proposal. The absence of such a mechanism makes it difficult to determine the veracity of claims made by either side, further fueling the cycle of accusations and counter-accusations.

The international community has repeatedly called for restraint and dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Various international organizations and countries have urged both sides to adhere to the ceasefire agreement, investigate alleged violations transparently, and engage in constructive dialogue to find a lasting peaceful resolution to the conflict. The ongoing exchange of accusations and lack of a joint investigative mechanism hinder efforts towards de-escalation and sustainable peace.

The establishment of a joint fact-finding mechanism remains a crucial step in building trust and promoting stability in the region. Such a mechanism could play a vital role in objectively investigating ceasefire violations, attributing responsibility, and preventing future escalations. Armenia’s proposal offers a potential pathway towards greater transparency and accountability, and Azerbaijan’s engagement with this initiative could signal a willingness to move towards a more peaceful and stable future. Until then, the recurring accusations of disinformation and the absence of a credible investigative process will continue to cast a shadow over the prospects for lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The international community must continue to exert pressure on both sides to engage in constructive dialogue and find a peaceful resolution to their differences.
