UN Launches Global Survey to Combat Misinformation and Disinformation Impeding Sustainable Development Goals
NEW YORK – The United Nations has embarked on a significant initiative to tackle the pervasive issue of misinformation and disinformation, recognizing its detrimental impact on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As mandated by the Global Digital Compact, adopted by UN Member States in 2024, the organization is conducting a comprehensive global survey aimed at assessing the extent of the problem and identifying effective countermeasures. This survey, spearheaded by the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC), serves as a crucial step towards fulfilling Action 35(e) of the Compact, which specifically calls for evaluating the influence of misleading information on global development progress.
