Zelensky Calls for Security Guarantees and Warns of Russian Disinformation Campaign

Zelensky Presses for Security Guarantees, Criticizes US Engagement with Russia

Kyiv, Ukraine – In a candid press conference, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a forceful call for Western allies to provide concrete security guarantees to Ukraine this year, emphasizing his determination to bring the ongoing war with Russia to a decisive end within 2023. Zelensky stressed the urgency of these guarantees, linking them directly to his administration’s objective of concluding the conflict. This plea comes amidst intensifying fighting and continued Russian aggression in various parts of the country.

Zelensky also expressed sharp criticism of the United States for what he perceived as facilitating Russian President Vladimir Putin’s re-emergence onto the international stage. He pointed to recent bilateral talks between US and Russian officials in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as evidence of this. While acknowledging the US right to engage in such discussions, Zelensky argued that this interaction, the first of its kind since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, undermined the international community’s efforts to isolate Russia in response to its aggression. He suggested that this engagement provided Putin with an undeserved platform, potentially weakening the collective pressure being applied.

The Ukrainian president didn’t mince words when addressing former US President Donald Trump’s recent comments on the war, accusing Trump of being influenced by Russian propaganda. Zelensky expressed disappointment, labeling Trump’s statements as emanating from a "bubble of misinformation" originating from Moscow. He underscored the danger of relying on narratives propagated by what he called “pathological liars” within the Russian government. Zelensky’s remarks followed Trump’s characterization of his talks with Moscow as "very good" and his suggestion that Ukraine bore responsibility for the conflict, a narrative that aligns with Russia’s justifications for the invasion.

Zelensky Rejects Disinformation and Highlights US Support

Zelensky vehemently refuted claims circulating about his declining approval ratings, dismissing reports suggesting a drop to 4% as Russian disinformation designed to undermine public confidence in his leadership. He emphasized his understanding of the origins and intent of such misinformation campaigns. Simultaneously, he highlighted the significant financial and military support Ukraine has received from the United States, totaling $67 billion in military aid and $31.5 billion in budgetary assistance. Zelensky categorically rejected allegations that Ukraine was being pressured to cede control of its natural resources in return for this aid, characterizing such suggestions as baseless and unserious. He reiterated that Ukraine’s sovereignty is not negotiable.

Zelensky expressed confidence in the resilience and strength of the Ukrainian armed forces, describing them as the most robust military force in Europe. He asserted that this strength provides Ukraine with a position of dignity and equality in its interactions with international partners. He also emphasized the widespread public opposition within Ukraine to any concessions to Russia, suggesting a national resolve against territorial compromises. This declaration underscores the significant hurdles faced in achieving a negotiated settlement to the conflict.

Zelensky’s press conference reveals the complex challenges facing Ukraine as it navigates the ongoing conflict, international relations, and the pervasive influence of disinformation. His pleas for security guarantees, criticism of US engagement with Russia, and rejection of misinformation campaigns all point to a leader determined to secure his nation’s future while countering external pressures and internal narratives that threaten to undermine Ukraine’s resilience. The continued support of international allies, particularly against the backdrop of geopolitical complexities, remains crucial for Ukraine’s ability to defend its sovereignty and achieve a lasting peace.
