Azerbaijan Voices Concern Over Rising Disinformation in Turkish Media, Jeopardizing Bilateral Media Cooperation

Baku, Azerbaijan – The Media Development Agency of Azerbaijan (MDA) has expressed deep concern over a growing trend of disinformation targeting Azerbaijan within certain segments of the Turkish media, a development that threatens to undermine the strong media cooperation between the two brotherly nations. The MDA has identified instances of false and misleading reporting in prominent Turkish outlets, including Hürriyet and Sabah, raising questions about the sources and verification processes employed by these publications. This surge in negative coverage comes as a surprise and disappointment to Azerbaijani officials and citizens, particularly given the longstanding close relationship between the two countries. The MDA warns that this trend contradicts the spirit of the Azerbaijan-Türkiye Joint Media Platform, established in 2021 to combat disinformation and promote accurate reporting on international issues.

The MDA’s concerns were articulated by Natig Mammadli, Deputy Executive Director of the agency, who emphasized the negative impact this disinformation is having on Azerbaijani society. Mammadli pointed out that Azerbaijan has historically faced disinformation campaigns from various international actors, including Russia, Iran, Armenia, and certain Western media outlets. However, the emergence of similar narratives within the Turkish media landscape is particularly troubling, given the strategic partnership and shared cultural heritage between the two countries. The MDA’s statement calls on Turkish media organizations to uphold journalistic ethics and prioritize accurate reporting, particularly concerning news related to Azerbaijan. The agency stresses the importance of verifying information from credible sources and avoiding the dissemination of unsubstantiated claims that could harm bilateral relations.

The MDA’s statement specifically cites instances where Turkish media outlets have published inaccurate information about Azerbaijan, often relying on questionable sources and failing to adhere to basic journalistic principles of fact-checking and balanced reporting. These instances, according to Mammadli, not only misrepresent the reality on the ground in Azerbaijan but also contribute to a broader climate of misinformation that can negatively impact public perception and bilateral relations. The MDA emphasizes that such practices undermine the very foundation of the Azerbaijan-Türkiye Joint Media Platform, which was established to foster collaboration and counter disinformation through joint efforts.

The establishment of the Azerbaijan-Türkiye Joint Media Platform in 2021 marked a significant step in strengthening media cooperation between the two nations. The platform was founded on the principle of fostering mutual understanding and promoting accurate reporting on matters of bilateral and international importance. One of its primary objectives was to combat disinformation campaigns targeting both countries, leveraging their combined resources and expertise to counter false narratives and promote objective journalism. The recent instances of negative coverage in Turkish media directly contravene this objective, raising concerns about the commitment of certain media outlets to the principles enshrined in the joint platform.

The MDA’s appeal to Turkish institutions highlights the importance of government oversight and regulatory mechanisms in ensuring responsible media practices. The agency calls on relevant Turkish authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the sources and motives behind the disinformation campaigns targeting Azerbaijan. Furthermore, the MDA urges Turkish media regulators to take appropriate measures to address instances of unethical reporting and promote adherence to journalistic standards. This includes strengthening fact-checking mechanisms, promoting media literacy, and holding media organizations accountable for spreading false or misleading information.

The MDA emphasizes that the issue of disinformation is not limited to individual media outlets but represents a broader challenge to the integrity of the information ecosystem. The agency stresses the need for collective action by governments, media organizations, and civil society to combat the spread of disinformation and promote a culture of accurate and responsible reporting. The MDA remains committed to working with its Turkish counterparts to address these concerns and strengthen the Azerbaijan-Türkiye Joint Media Platform, ensuring that it effectively serves its purpose of combating disinformation and fostering greater understanding between the two nations. The agency’s call for action underscores the urgency of addressing this issue and preserving the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye.
