FATA University Explores the Profound Influence of Media on Society and Development

KOHAT, Pakistan – The Department of Political Science at FATA University recently hosted a compelling seminar titled "Journalism and Development: Media’s Social Impact," shedding light on the multifaceted role of media in shaping societies, driving development, and influencing political and economic landscapes. The event, organized in collaboration with the Association of Political Scientists, featured Dr. Intikhab Ahmed, Associate Professor at Anhui Normal University, China, as the keynote speaker. Dr. Ahmed brought a wealth of research and experience to the discussion, providing students with a nuanced understanding of the media’s influence on a global and local scale.

Dr. Ahmed’s address underscored the media’s transformative power, emphasizing its capacity to extend beyond mere information dissemination. He argued that media plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion, fostering political stability, and catalyzing social development. Drawing on both international and local case studies, he illustrated how media narratives can influence societal behaviors and impact policy decisions. This perspective highlighted the media’s potential to be a powerful force for positive change, but also acknowledged its susceptibility to manipulation and the potential for negative consequences.

Visiting Lecturer Muhammad Marwan elaborated on the seminar’s objectives, explaining its significance within the students’ academic calendar. He emphasized the event’s aim to deepen students’ comprehension of journalism’s societal impact, fostering critical thinking about the media’s influence in diverse contexts. The seminar provided a platform for students to engage with complex issues related to media ethics, responsibility, and the challenges posed by the digital age.

A vibrant interactive session followed Dr. Ahmed’s presentation, enabling students to explore both the positive and negative impacts of media, particularly within the unique socio-political landscape of tribal regions such as Dara Adam Khel and FATA. Participants emphasized the crucial role of independent and responsible journalism in contributing to peacebuilding, human rights advocacy, social progress, political stability, and economic prosperity. This discussion provided a valuable opportunity to analyze the specific challenges and opportunities presented by media operating within these regions.

The seminar’s scope extended beyond the foundational aspects of journalism, delving into critical areas such as the media’s role in governance, the importance of press freedom, and the pervasive influence of social media. This comprehensive approach allowed students to consider the complexities of media’s interaction with various societal structures and the evolving challenges faced by traditional and new media platforms. The discussions highlighted the need for media literacy and critical engagement with information in an era of rapid technological advancement.

Concluding the seminar, Dr. Wajid Mahmood, Head of the Political Science Department, expressed his gratitude to Dr. Intikhab Ahmed for his insightful presentation and commended the students for their active participation. Dr. Mahmood underscored the importance of such academic activities in fostering students’ intellectual growth and encouraged further exploration of these critical issues through future seminars. He emphasized the university’s commitment to providing students with opportunities to engage with contemporary issues and develop the critical thinking skills necessary for navigating the complexities of the modern world. The seminar served as a testament to FATA University’s dedication to fostering intellectual curiosity and promoting a deeper understanding of the media’s profound impact on society. This exploration of the media’s dynamic role in shaping public discourse, influencing policy, and driving social change provided students with valuable insights and equipped them with the critical thinking skills essential for informed citizenship in an increasingly media-saturated world.
