Kremlin-Backed ‘Matryoshka’ Network Targets European Elections with Deepfakes and Forged Media

Paragraph 1: The Onslaught Begins
A sophisticated Russian disinformation network, identified by researchers as “Matryoshka,” has launched a coordinated, multi-pronged attack targeting the upcoming elections in Sweden and France. The group, known for its use of bots, trolls, and coordinated anonymous media resources, specializes in fabricating high-quality short videos and forged front pages of legitimate Western news outlets. The latest wave of misinformation specifically targets Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and French politician Gabriel Attal, seeking to destabilize their political standing ahead of critical votes. This campaign is not merely a random act of interference; it is a calculated effort to exploit existing political tensions in Europe, utilizing the recognizable logos of trusted media houses to lend false credibility to completely baseless allegations.
Paragraph 2: Fabricated Child Trafficking Scandal Against Attal
The most insidious of the fabricated videos claims that Gabriel Attal, the former French Prime Minister who has announced his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election, supposedly vacationed in Baden-Baden, Germany, with a fictional individual named “Volker Pelle.” The videos allege that “Pelle” is a key organizer of a massive criminal scheme trafficking children from Africa, China, Vietnam, and Thailand to pedophiles in Europe. The false narrative extends further, accusing Attal of personally discussing involvement in illegal adoptions with this fabricated figure. To add a layer of false authenticity, the videos feature a supposed France 24 journalist questioning why Attal did not use the legal adoption process, instead turning to “the most notorious supplier of victims,” a quote completely manufactured by the Matryoshka network.
Paragraph 3: The Swedish Parallel and Political Poison
Parallel to the French attacks, the network has targeted Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson with a mirrored scandal. The videos claim that Kristersson’s family used “Volker Pelle’s” services to adopt three children, tying the Swedish leader to the same fictitious trafficking ring. Additional fabricated content asserts that Kristersson’s approval rating dropped by 30% after he spoke out against Russian disinformation. The disinformation campaign seeks to portray Kristersson’s proactive stance on Russian interference as a political liability, labelling such discussions as “poison” for him and his Moderate Party. The videos include a fake quote attributed to a “Euronews editorial director” named “Claus Strunz,” warning that politicians discussing Russian interference are committing “political suicide.”
Paragraph 4: Forged Front Pages and Vicious Mockery
Beyond the videos, Matryoshka has distributed starkly fabricated front pages of reputable newspapers to amplify the deception. A fake edition of France’s La Tribune features a headline claiming President Emmanuel Macron refused to speak with Attal following a “drug scandal,” blaring “Go to hell!” above the article. Similarly, a forged Libération cover suggests Macron “distanced himself” from Attal over the same fabricated drug scandal. To target the Swedish audience, the network forged covers of Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet that mock the two leaders by superimposing their faces onto the bodies of the cartoon characters “Beavis and Butt-Head,” with captions referring to them as “clinical idiots who have taken over Europe.”
Paragraph 5: Contrasting Fiction with Reality
The sophistication of the attack lies in its careful construction—the false headlines are layered over the real layouts of these publications, obscuring the actual stories. In reality, the genuine cover stories of these outlets during that period focused on unrelated domestic issues. For instance, the true La Tribune story concerned political disputes over water following a severe drought and extreme heat in France, while the real Libération piece discussed the same environmental crisis. The forged versions completely replace these legitimate topics with sensational, damaging lies about the politicians, making it increasingly difficult for the average citizen to distinguish between fact and fiction when scrolling through social media.
Paragraph 6: Electoral Timing and a Broadened European Offensive
The timing of this disinformation blitz is deliberately strategic. Sweden is scheduled to hold its Riksdag election on September 13th, where Kristersson’s ruling bloc (currently trailing the center-left opposition led by the Social Democrats by a 52.4% to 45.6% margin per an Ipsos poll) is fighting for survival. Simultaneously, the campaign targets Attal, who officially announced his bid for the French presidency on May 22nd, ahead of the spring 2027 election. Notably, this is not the first wave of Matryoshka fakes targeting Attal. The network is also active in Germany, where regional elections are set for September. German intelligence (BfV) has already issued official warnings regarding a related campaign that promoted the hashtag #TimeToDivideGermany, calling for the re-division of the country as a “historical necessity.” This coordinated assault across multiple European democracies confirms that the Kremlin’s goal is to erode public trust in Western institutions and politicians through relentless, bottomless fabrication.
