Social Media Trends in Mid-2025: A Shift in Platforms and Priorities

The first half of 2025 has witnessed a whirlwind of changes in the social media landscape, marked by platform migrations, evolving content trends, and shifting user priorities. Sprout Social’s Pulse Surveys, conducted in Q2 and Q3 2025, offer insights into these evolving dynamics, providing a roadmap for brands navigating this complex terrain. The research, encompassing over 2,000 social media users across the US, UK, and Australia, reveals a growing interest in community-driven platforms, ethical concerns surrounding AI-generated content, and a renewed emphasis on human connection.

Emerging Platforms and the Quest for Authenticity: The fragmentation of the social media ecosystem has led users to explore alternative platforms. While nascent spaces like Bluesky and Mastodon gain traction, community-based platforms like Reddit are experiencing a surge in interest, particularly among Gen Z and Millennials. The driving force behind this shift is a desire for authentic human connection, away from the pervasive advertising and algorithmic curation of established networks. Users are primarily drawn to new platforms by the presence of friends and acquaintances, signaling a yearning for genuine interaction.

Bluesky’s Ascent and the Demand for Control: Bluesky, a decentralized social network, has experienced explosive growth, fueled by its promise of algorithmic transparency and an ad-free environment. Users value the control they have over their feeds, a stark contrast to the curated experiences offered by mainstream platforms. While political views are not a primary motivator, liberal-leaning users are more likely to cite this as a factor compared to moderates or conservatives. Brands venturing onto Bluesky are expected to prioritize customer care, educational content, and entertainment, leveraging short-form video and user-generated content to build authentic connections.

Navigating the Ethical Landscape of Social Media: As social media becomes increasingly intertwined with broader societal issues, brands face greater scrutiny regarding their online conduct. Consumers, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, express heightened concern over undisclosed AI-generated content and data privacy. The pendulum is swinging back towards brands taking a stand on social and political issues, with a significant portion of consumers, especially younger generations and minority groups, expressing a preference for brands that demonstrate social responsibility. This calls for a nuanced approach, requiring brands to carefully consider the issues they address and ensure alignment with their values.

Redefining the Impact of Social Media on Well-being: Contrary to persistent narratives about the negative impacts of social media, a majority of survey respondents report positive effects on their mental health, social lives, and financial decisions. Younger generations, in particular, leverage social media for educational purposes, community building, and as a source of respite from current events. This underscores the power of “edutainment” and the potential for social media to be a force for good, empowering users with knowledge and fostering meaningful connections.

The Essence of Boldness and the Power of Authenticity: Consumers define “bold” brands as honest and inspirational, prioritizing authenticity over fleeting trends. Unethical behavior is the biggest deterrent for consumers, surpassing pricing or stances on public issues. This reinforces the importance of transparency and ethical conduct, building trust with audiences and fostering long-term relationships. Brands that prioritize genuine connection and demonstrate their values resonate most with consumers.

Content Strategies for a Changing Landscape: Amidst the evolving dynamics of social media, consumers prioritize audience interaction and original, recurring content series. Serialized content allows brands to tell richer stories and build deeper connections with their audiences, fostering engagement and loyalty. Successful series focus on complete narratives within each installment, featuring recurring characters that resonate with viewers. Examples like eBay Motors’ Instagram series and Hinge’s Substack series demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach across different platforms and formats.

The Human Touch in a World of AI: Despite the rise of AI-generated content, consumers express a strong preference for human-created content, viewing it as more trustworthy and authentic. This sentiment extends to influencer marketing, with a significant portion of consumers expressing discomfort with AI influencers. Brands that emphasize the human element in their content creation, highlighting the creators and craftspeople behind their posts, build trust and resonate with audiences seeking genuine connection.

Social Media’s Expanding Role in the Customer Journey: Social media is no longer a peripheral marketing tactic but a crucial component of the entire customer journey. Gen Z, in particular, relies heavily on social media for product research and information seeking. The rise of social search underscores the importance of engaging with audiences, providing valuable information, and offering authentic customer care. Influencer marketing remains a powerful driver of purchase decisions, further solidifying social media’s impact on consumer behavior.

Financial Education and Travel Planning in the Social Sphere: Consumers increasingly turn to social media for financial guidance and travel planning, seeking advice from real people and leveraging platforms like TikTok for inspiration. This presents opportunities for financial services and travel brands to connect with audiences, offer valuable insights, and build trust. By providing educational content and engaging with potential customers, brands can establish themselves as trusted resources and influence purchasing decisions.

Navigating the Future of Social Media: The current state of social media requires brands to adapt and prioritize genuine connection, ethical conduct, and human-centric content strategies. By understanding the evolving needs and preferences of their audiences, brands can navigate this complex landscape and build meaningful relationships that drive business results. Investing in original content, prioritizing audience engagement, and embracing the human element are key to success in this ever-changing digital world.
