Russian Disinformation Campaign Promotes False Narrative Regarding Drone Incursion in Poland

Drone Incursion Sparks Disinformation Blitz as Poland Investigates

On the night of September 9-10, at least 19 Russian drones breached Polish airspace, prompting NATO fighter jets to scramble and shoot down several of the unmanned aircraft. This incident triggered a wave of disinformation online, pushing a pro-Russian narrative and sowing seeds of doubt about the events. The disinformation campaign intensified following the Polish State Protection Service’s announcement that it had neutralized a drone operating over government buildings in Warsaw on September 15. Pro-Russian accounts on social media platforms have been actively disseminating misleading information, attempting to deflect responsibility from Russia and create confusion.

One key piece of disinformation revolves around damage to a house in Wyryki-Wola, eastern Poland, attributed to a drone crash. Pro-Russian accounts falsely claimed that the damage was pre-existing, caused by a storm two months earlier. These claims, spread widely on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Telegram, contradict eyewitness accounts from the homeowners, Alicja and Tomasz Wesolowski, who confirmed they were home at the time of impact. While initial reports identified a drone as the cause, local authorities later clarified the damage could have resulted from falling debris from downed drones. This ambiguity fueled speculation and provided fertile ground for disinformation to flourish.

Further muddying the waters, Polish daily newspaper Rzeczpospolita reported that the Lublin prosecutor’s office had not yet officially identified the object that struck the house, adding to the uncertainty. Reports, unconfirmed by official sources, suggested a missile from a Polish F-16, potentially aimed at intercepting a drone, might have been responsible. This information vacuum allowed the disinformation narrative to gain traction. Amidst the confusion, Poland’s Security Bureau urged the government to swiftly clarify the incident, emphasizing the need to verify information and counter disinformation efforts, particularly in the context of hybrid warfare. While the exact cause of the damage remains under investigation, the physical evidence points to the direct impact of an object, further highlighting the need for a comprehensive investigation and transparent communication.

Polish authorities have characterized the drone incursion as a “deliberate Russian provocation,” designed to test NATO’s aerial defenses. NATO has acknowledged the airspace violation but stopped short of confirming Russia’s intent, stating, “whether or not Russia’s actions were deliberate, Russia violated NATO airspace.” This cautious phrasing, while diplomatic, also contributed to ambiguity that was exploited by purveyors of disinformation. Poland has firmly rejected former US President Donald Trump’s suggestion that the incursion might have been a mistake, while the Kremlin accused Warsaw of spreading “myths” to exacerbate the Ukrainian crisis.

The incident also sparked discussion about the capabilities of Gerbera drones, believed to have been used in the incursion. Pro-Russian propaganda downplayed their destructive potential, describing them as lightweight and made of styrofoam, capable of causing only minor damage upon impact. However, aeronautics experts contradict this narrative. David Bacci, a senior researcher at the University of Oxford, confirmed that while relatively inexpensive to manufacture, these drones can carry up to 10kg of explosives, enough to destroy a civilian house. While not posing a significant threat to military assets, their low cost and ease of deployment make them a cost-effective tool for harassment, reconnaissance, and spreading fear. Bacci also highlighted the asymmetry of using expensive air-to-air missiles to counter relatively cheap drones, creating a financial burden for defenders.

The disinformation campaign extended to accusations that Ukraine and Poland orchestrated the incursion as a “false flag” operation. Far-right figures like former Polish MEP Janusz Korwin-Mikke propagated this narrative, suggesting the drones were launched from Ukrainian territory due to their limited range. However, expert analysis clarified that the operational range extends to 1,200km for one-way missions, making launch from Russia or Belarus entirely plausible. Polish authorities have indicated some drones originated from Belarus. These false accusations, amplified online, attempted to undermine Polish-Ukrainian relations and shift blame away from Russia. The disinformation campaign further aimed to discredit Poland’s desire to send troops to Ukraine by alleging the incursion was staged to justify military intervention. Despite contradictory media reports regarding Polish-Ukrainian military cooperation, Poland’s Ministry of Defence clarified that training exercises on drone technology would take place on Polish territory.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has dismissed these claims as disinformation, firmly attributing responsibility for the airspace violation to Russia. The incident underscores the challenges posed by disinformation in modern conflicts, highlighting the need for rapid, transparent communication from authorities and critical evaluation of information circulating online. The Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs has warned of increased disinformation activity from Russian and Belarusian sources, aimed at diverting blame, sowing discord, and undermining public trust in official accounts. This ongoing disinformation campaign underscores the importance of media literacy and the need to rely on verified sources, especially during times of heightened geopolitical tension.
