Royal Society Fellows Convene to Address Elon Musk’s Alleged Misinformation and Code of Conduct Breaches

LONDON – A storm is brewing within the hallowed halls of the Royal Society, the world’s oldest scientific academy, as its esteemed fellows gather to address concerns regarding Elon Musk’s alleged propagation of misinformation and potential breaches of their code of conduct. The meeting, scheduled for Monday, comes in the wake of an open letter signed by over 2,400 individuals, including Nobel laureates, expressing dismay at the Society’s perceived inaction over Mr. Musk’s activities on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter).

The open letter, penned by Emeritus Professor Stephen Curry of Imperial College London, accuses Mr. Musk, a 2018 inductee into the Royal Society, of actively disseminating unfounded conspiracy theories and engaging in behavior unbecoming of a fellow. Professor Curry emphasizes that the letter’s intent is not to stifle political discourse or enforce conformity but rather to uphold the Society’s fundamental principles of scientific integrity, respect for evidence-based reasoning, and adherence to truth. These core tenets will be at the heart of the discussions surrounding the Society’s code of conduct, particularly concerning the public pronouncements and behaviors of its fellows.

Professor Curry underscores the significance of a Royal Society fellowship, describing it as an honor contingent upon upholding the highest ideals and standards of scientific conduct. He contends that Mr. Musk’s actions, particularly his dissemination of misinformation, represent a serious deviation from these standards, thereby undermining the trust and credibility of the scientific community. The open letter also highlights Mr. Musk’s attack on UK Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips regarding historical grooming gangs, an incident that further fueled concerns about his adherence to the Society’s principles.

The letter, addressed to Royal Society President Sir Adrian Smith, prompted a response announcing the upcoming meeting to address the concerns raised. While the Society has previously issued a statement condemning the suppression of research, threats to academic freedom, and the spread of misinformation on online platforms, it has refrained from directly naming Mr. Musk. Professor Curry, while acknowledging the statement as a positive step, believes a more explicit and decisive response is warranted.

The Royal Society’s statement, titled "Science Under Threat," denounces the increasing prevalence of ideological agendas aimed at undermining scientific inquiry and rational debate. It expresses concern over the misuse of online platforms, which, instead of fostering open discourse, are becoming breeding grounds for harmful misinformation and ideological attacks. The statement affirms the Society’s commitment to upholding equality, diversity, and inclusion, principles that underpin the scientific enterprise.

Professor Curry acknowledges that a definitive resolution regarding Mr. Musk’s fellowship is unlikely to be reached at Monday’s meeting. However, he stresses the importance of the Society providing a clear account of its options and its assessment of whether Mr. Musk’s actions constitute a breach of the code of conduct. He believes that such transparency is crucial for maintaining the trust of the wider scientific community. As a non-fellow, Professor Curry is not privy to the closed-door discussions. The onus will be on the Society’s leadership to decide on any subsequent public statements or actions following the meeting.

The gathering of Royal Society fellows marks a significant moment for the scientific community as it grapples with the challenge of combating misinformation in the digital age. The outcome of their deliberations will not only impact Mr. Musk’s standing within the Society but also send a powerful message about the importance of upholding scientific integrity and responsible communication in an increasingly polarized and information-saturated world. The eyes of the scientific world are upon the Royal Society as it navigates this complex and sensitive issue, balancing the principles of free speech with the imperative to safeguard the integrity of scientific discourse.
