Police in Soccsksargen Bolster Efforts to Combat Disinformation and Misinformation

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) in the Soccsksargen region has intensified its campaign against the proliferation of disinformation and misinformation, recognizing the detrimental impact of false narratives on public trust and safety. This initiative involves equipping PNP personnel with the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively identify and counter false information circulating both online and offline. A key component of this strategy is collaboration with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Region 12, a partnership deemed essential for empowering communities to discern truth from falsehood in the digital age.

A recent collaborative effort between the PNP and PIA Region 12 took the form of a “War on Truth: A Consultative Forum” held at Camp Gen. Paulino Santos in Tambler, General Santos City. This forum provided a platform for information sharing and training, focusing on enhancing the ability of police officers and community stakeholders to combat the growing threat of misinformation. Christian Matullano, information officer of the PIA regional office, led a session on combating disinformation through fact-checking, emphasizing the crucial role of the PNP-PIA partnership in equipping communities with the critical thinking skills needed to navigate the information landscape.

Matullano underscored the significance of this inter-agency collaboration, stating that it “plays an essential role in combating disinformation.” He further elaborated on the impact of the partnership, explaining that “by working together, communities will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to guard against the spread of false information, especially on today’s fast-moving digital platforms.” This highlights the recognition that disinformation poses a particularly potent threat in the online sphere, where false narratives can spread rapidly and reach vast audiences.

The PNP and PIA’s collaborative approach aims to create a safer environment for everyone, especially in online spaces. This comprehensive strategy involves not only training police officers but also empowering community members to identify and counter misinformation. The shared goal is to foster critical thinking and media literacy, thereby creating a more resilient society less susceptible to manipulation through false narratives. Matullano expressed gratitude for the ongoing partnership with the Police Regional Office (PRO) 12, emphasizing the importance of collaboration “in building a well-informed and empowered society.”

The “War on Truth” forum, themed “Truth Matters: Empowering Communities Against Misinformation, Disinformation, and Malinformation,” provided PNP personnel with essential skills in identifying and discerning false information. This training was part of the observance of the 30th Police Community Relations (PCR) Month, an annual event that underscores the PNP’s commitment to community engagement and partnership. The focus on combating misinformation during PCR Month highlights the growing recognition of this issue as a significant threat to public safety and order.

The PNP PRO 12 and PIA Region 12 are continuing their joint efforts to combat the spread of disinformation and misinformation, recognizing the critical need for a multi-faceted approach involving education, training, and community engagement. The partnership aims to foster a more discerning and informed public, equipped to navigate the complex information environment and contribute to a safer and more trustworthy society. The initiative demonstrates a proactive stance in addressing the challenges posed by the proliferation of false narratives, particularly in the digital age. This commitment to truth and accuracy is essential for maintaining public trust and fostering a more informed and resilient society.
