Mwaghavul Monarch Decries Social Media Abuse Among Youths, Urges Focus on Development and Unity

MANGU, PLATEAU STATE – His Royal Highness John Putmang Hirse, the paramount ruler of the Mwaghavul people in Plateau State, has expressed deep concern over the escalating misuse of social media platforms by youths within his community and beyond. During a ceremony held at his palace in Mangu on Wednesday to inaugurate the newly elected National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA), the monarch lamented the transformation of these platforms, originally designed for communication, education, and societal advancement, into breeding grounds for hate speech, the dissemination of fake news, and the perpetuation of online insults. He stressed the critical need for young people to exercise greater responsibility and mindfulness in their online engagements, recognizing the potential ramifications of their actions on both the image of the Mwaghavul people and the wider society.

The paramount ruler’s remarks underscored a growing anxiety within traditional institutions and communities across Nigeria regarding the negative impacts of uncontrolled social media use. While acknowledging the benefits of these platforms in facilitating connectivity and information sharing, he emphasized the urgent need to address the escalating trend of online abuse and its potential consequences for social cohesion and peaceful coexistence. The monarch pointed to instances of inflammatory posts and reckless online behavior that demonstrate a disregard for the potential harm they can inflict on individuals and the community as a whole. He stressed that such actions risk undermining efforts to foster peace and harmony within the Mwaghavul community and beyond.

The monarch’s admonishment comes at a time when Nigeria grapples with the complex challenges posed by the proliferation of misinformation and hate speech on social media platforms. The ease with which false information can be disseminated and amplified online has contributed to heightened tensions and fueled conflicts in various parts of the country. In this context, the paramount ruler’s call for responsible social media usage resonates with broader national concerns about the need to regulate online spaces and promote a culture of respect and tolerance. He urged the newly inducted MDA executive committee to prioritize tackling this issue and to work towards fostering a more positive and constructive online environment within the Mwaghavul community.

Beyond the issue of social media abuse, the paramount ruler also charged the new MDA leadership with prioritizing the development of their land and promoting unity among their people. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to address the challenges facing the Mwaghavul community, including insecurity and agricultural difficulties. He called on the MDA to advocate for the needs of their people and to leverage their platform to pursue development initiatives that will benefit the Mwaghavul land and Plateau State as a whole. The monarch’s words served as a reminder of the crucial role that community organizations like the MDA play in driving progress and ensuring the well-being of their constituents.

Mr. Bulus Dabit, the newly elected National President of the MDA, acknowledged the challenges facing the Mwaghavul people, particularly in the areas of security and agriculture. He assured the paramount ruler and the community that the MDA is committed to advocating for their rights and pursuing development initiatives that will improve their livelihoods. While acknowledging the limitations of the MDA in directly implementing large-scale infrastructural projects, Mr. Dabit emphasized the organization’s role in lobbying for government support and resources to address the needs of the Mwaghavul people.

The inauguration ceremony marked the formal handover of leadership from the outgoing MDA executive committee to the newly elected members. The event, held at the MDA National Secretariat in Mangu Local Government Area, symbolized a renewed commitment to serving the interests of the Mwaghavul community and working towards a brighter future. The new MDA leadership faces a significant task in addressing the challenges outlined by the paramount ruler, from curbing social media abuse to promoting development and fostering unity within the community. Their success will depend on their ability to effectively mobilize resources, engage with stakeholders, and inspire collective action towards achieving their goals. The paramount ruler’s call for responsible online behavior and a focus on community development serves as a guiding principle for the MDA as it embarks on its new chapter of leadership.
